Anton Bitel Sight & Sound Mitton's film never goes where you expect, while deploying its horror tropes to show the cracks and fissures in contemporary America's nuclear family structure. Its ending, so poignantly bittersweet, is very hard-earned... Aug 7, 2018 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut Simon and his son, Finn, go to spend a few weeks doing up an old house, where they encounter its previous owner, Lydia (deceased). Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 2, 2021 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts A simple yet solid paranormal story. Rated: 7/10 Dec 16, 2020 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed It's not particularly divisive, it's just not entertaining for all. It's definitely worth a watch for how it approaches things and what it does with its central subject. Rated: 2/5 Apr 11, 2020 Full Review Matt Donato Slashfilm The Witch In The Window is a harrowing, scorchingly poignant and devastating glimpse into societal fears that have redefined family dinner conversations. Rated: 8/10 May 27, 2019 Full Review Kimberley Elizabeth Nightmare on Film Street The Witch in the Window has some creative spooks, an interesting villain, and a few good soundbites, but like Simon's house - it still feels like a work in progress. Genie C I literally signed up to RT just to post this. I didn't know what to expect and it blew me away. As a hardened horror fan, I was still gasping, getting chills - it really was amazing. Definitely a slow-burn, I'd recommend it to gothic horror fans. It's the perfect example of the old haunted house setting that manages to feel fresh, given its fantastic characterisation, pacing, perfectly-timed scares - by the halfway mark, you'll be checking the background for any witch sightings. It gives a wonderful feeling of looking over the characters' shoulders because it's easy to care for this charming father-son duo. We're also given enough info about the antagonist's malignant motivations without demystifying the witch too soon (again, excellent pacing). I'd recommend this to fans of spooky, psychological ghosties. - zero blood or violence whatsoever. If you enjoyed "The Others" or "The Sixth Sense", this is for you! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Tom L I’ve watched hundreds, if not thousands, of horror movies and I can’t recall the last time one literally gave me goosebumps, but this one did numerous times. Extremely well executed in almost every aspect - the writing, casting, acting, music, settings, hardly a missed note anywhere. The rural Vermont setting was beautiful, and the lovely old farmhouse took on more creepy overtones as the story progressed. I’ll be deliberately vague to avoid a spoiler, but there is a daytime ghostly encounter that left me breathless. Aside from the ghostly element, there is a poignant story of a divorced couple and the 12-year-old son caught in the middle. The bittersweet ending may strike some as a little corny, but I thought even that avoided going too far into maudlin sentimentality. Similarly, the relative lack of back story to the ghost/witch may frustrate some but enough explanation was given to make me invested in the story. One word about the casting that particularly impressed me. I’ve noticed that many low-budget films, of which this is obviously one, tend to cast actors that look “made for tv,” as in attractive in a rather plastic and generic way. This was a rare cast of unknowns who looked and acted like real people, not actors from the CSI franchise. This really added significantly to my enjoyment of the film. A warning for those who like non stop action and gore: you’ll be disappointed with this subtle, intelligent, and original approach to the time-worn ghost story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review Edgar M It's scary as hell. I'm a big fan of horror movies, and this one really surprised me. It's a hidden gem. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Liam D An solid supernatural ghost story but there could have been more elements that would have made the film better Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Aaron S While the acting can be a bit wobbly, The Witch in the Window is able to produce some extremely effective creepy scenes. Its scariness won't blow your hair back, but its cleverly crafted visuals and camera work really shine in some of the sequences. It also has some genuinely twisty scenes that are amazingly spooky. This is a very solid and haunting film that does well to not outstay its welcome while fully fulfilling its intentions. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/23 Full Review teddy o atmosphere very reminiscent of haunting of hill house/bly manor, well established creepy environment. the best thing about this movie though is the stand out acting by Alex Draper and Charlie Tacker playing father and son - their relationship is so carefully and cleverly crafted that you can't help but adore them. for a haunted house movie the film isn't much for exposition - but the actors' immense talent communicates internal dialogue so beautifully. if you're after a super scary horror then keep looking but this is so worth a watch, especially if you enjoy horror that actually invests you in characters instead of throwing sacrificial meat bags at you.
