It must be allowed that [Jacques] Demy is an habitual offender on the count of sentimentality... yet he is capable of a tender, unsentimenial euphoria more intoxicating than any other film work in the field of sentimental farce. Go to Full Review

Despite the consistently sprightly surface, there's a somber undercurrent that lingers even when love triumphs and the music swells. Go to Full Review

It bypasses the more intimate style of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg to pay homage to splashy Hollywood musicals. Go to Full Review

This follow-up to The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is the French at their least charming, being a nearly unbearably coy Gallic imitation of an MGM musical dating from the heyday of Gene Kelly. Go to Full Review

Aug 29 Thank heaven for young girls. Actually, more like young ladies. Roquefort-y but boisterous old fashioned musical with French flair and some American dance moves by Gene Kelly. The film looks like a giant Easter celebration with its color coordinated clothing in pale pastels. I am still confused at how a woman would walk away from love simply due to her paramour's last name. It wasn't even a name like Hitler or Stalin. Had their lives crossed paths in the same era, imagine Demi Moore marrying the music shop owner and then receiving an honorific by the British monarch - she would have been Dame Demi Dame. Also, could an American actor/dancer of Greek ancestry, as George Chakiris is, be chosen for the role of Etienne if made today? Quelle horreur for the French PC crowd.
