Tic Toc M Bunuel's only movie in English and wow, he is touching on themes that pretty much only Kubrick was daring to, at around the same time. This movie is not only super provocative in its subject matter.....you can NEVER predict where it's going to go. It confounds your expectations at every turn, which makes watching this movie a real cool experience. This movie is hard to find - I don't believe it's ever been released on DVD or even videotape - but it is definitely worth hunting down if you're a Bunuel fan, or if you're just looking for something late 50s/early 60s that you've never seen before, something a little unusual. Bunuel in English should really be enough of an attraction, to be honest! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/15/23 Full Review William L Since this is a Buñuel film, I was curious going in how long it would take for an animal to get injured onscreen. The answer? Just under three and a half minutes. It's as vital to Buñuel's filmmaking process as the camera. One of just two films from the well-loved director originally in English, The Young One takes a strong stance on race in the boldfaced manner that defined Buñuel, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily a particularly nuanced film, posing a moral 'conflict' that pits a black man fleeing from prejudice and false accusations vs. a pedophilic hillbilly. Gosh, what a difficult decision to make. The key point of the film is instead the disparity in the way that Hamilton's Traver and Scott's Miller are treated after both are tied to sexual crimes (the former accused and innocent, but practically convicted by racial discord, the latter guilty but given a pass because of his identity and custom); you even get to see a somewhat revised version of Buñuel's formerly totally contemptuous take on the church in the form of Brook's Rev. Fleetwood, who argues in favors of Traver's innocence and calls out Miller's crimes, but does recognize the limits of his influence with respect to the law. A bit obvious in nature, but the film's heart is in the right place. Also, Claudio Brook sounds like George Takei. The film never rings a false note in telling this raw story of sexual tension and racial hatred. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
