What to Know

Critics Consensus

Driven by ride-or-die chemistry between Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon while director Ridley Scott provides scorching visuals fit for a postcard, Thelma & Louise is a feminist adventure that's equal parts provocative and rollicking.

Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/27/25 Full Review TheMovieSearch R Thelma & Louise is a truly special and spectacular film—a masterpiece that balances fun, relatability, and excitement while carving out a permanent place in cinema history. What makes this movie so remarkable is not just the story it tells but how fully it lives up to the expectations of its characters and the creativity behind them. Every choice, from the performances to the direction, feels purposeful and alive. How can you go wrong with a film starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis? These two powerhouses carry the movie with effortless strength. They begin as everyday women—relatable, grounded, and seemingly ordinary—before transforming into rambunctious, rebellious outlaws who command every frame. Watching them evolve is a thrill in itself. The film blends drama, suspense, and thriller elements with touches of love, lust, and excitement, creating a ride that never loses momentum. The direction is outstanding, carefully balancing raw emotion with cinematic flair. The screenplay is equally powerful, weaving in social commentary while never losing its grip on character and tension. There’s a back-and-forth rhythm in the storytelling that keeps the viewer on edge: one moment filled with humor and warmth, the next escalating into shocking twists of violence and suspense. That balance is what makes Thelma & Louise such a timeless experience. And of course, adding a young Brad Pitt to the mix doesn’t hurt. His presence brings an extra spark—one more memorable element in a film already overflowing with iconic moments. Though it was released before my time, the movie has aged beautifully. Watching it today feels as fresh and relevant as ever. It’s a testament to how timeless storytelling can transcend generations, giving people my age—who may not have been old enough to experience it during its release—the chance to enjoy it exactly as it was meant to be experienced. Thelma & Louise delivers on every promise it makes to the audience. It’s daring, emotional, stylish, and endlessly captivating. This isn’t just a film you watch—it’s a film you experience. For me, it’s one of those rare movies that feels as essential now as it did the day it first premiered. I can’t recommend it enough. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/25 Full Review nick s The leads were fabulous. The imagery and cinematography choices were impressive. All up a well executed movie. Could quibble over a few storytelling points but no need to take anything away from this piece of cinema. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/25 Full Review Kyle C Right from the start, Thelma’s husband is so immediately hateable that you’re rooting for her to escape. That sets the tone for the whole movie: men range from obnoxious to creepy, with only brief flashes of decency. (Brad Pitt shows up as the world’s hottest baby-faced hunk, but even he turns out to be just as gross as the rest.) The movie is full of great details—the tiny bites of a candy bar, the ominous but funny foreshadowing with a gun, and even the subtle image of them driving away from a storm cloud. The soundtrack is awesome, the atmosphere feels quintessentially late ’80s/early ’90s, and the landscapes are gorgeous. I love the role reversal between Thelma and Louise, especially once Louise becomes the more restrained one. The cops are almost cartoonishly bad, except for one who might care, though the movie keeps that ambiguous. There are moments of sly humor, like the cops hanging out with Darryl watching TV, or the whole pulled-over sequence, which is gold. It does get dark. The characters make some baffling choices that make you want to shake them, but it works because these women haven’t had real-world experience, and their decisions reflect that. The truck explosion scene felt a bit too over-the-top, breaking the tension, but otherwise the tone balances surprisingly well between humor and tragedy. And then there’s the finale. Rather than playing things safe or tying everything up neatly, the movie leans into its themes of freedom, control, and living on your own terms, no matter the cost. It also plays with expectations. If this were a male buddy road trip, we’d just go along for the chaos. But because they’re women, the audience instinctively wants them to be righteous, level-headed, or redeemable. That tension makes the film much more interesting and meta. Overall, Thelma & Louise is funny, frustrating, sharp, and ultimately devastating. Not flawless, but iconic for a reason. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/19/25 Full Review Nol P I finally watched again after all these yrs and it has held up nicely! A bit of loopholes and flaws in some scenes acting wise or this would gain a 9 out of 10! Sits at a respectable 8.5! The end song by Glen Frey is so strong and gave me a tear. The very end scene too is still a classic! Harvey Keitel was the strongest in this movie. Glad I watched again! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Read all reviews
