Judd Apatow definitely delivers funny and perceptive scenes in This is 40, even if they are buried in aimless self-indulgence. Read critic reviews

For someone fast approaching 40 there was a lot about this film that resonated and whilst Apatow plays for laughs a lot he is fully aware that there is a grain of truth in all his scenes here. For people younger this will probably seem like just a series of sketches and won't be as funny as other films like 'Knocked Up' or 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' but it made for uncomfortable but still funny viewing for me and I enjoyed hanging out with these characters. The film does go for too long though.

Being of the benchmark age mentioned in the title I had a particular interest in this film. Maybe it could highlight any potential pitfalls to looks out for or in some way redirect my life in a more productive and meaningful direction? Instead what I found in this was almost nothing that I could relate to in any way and some tired scenes involving the obligatory midlife crises, taking Viagra without your partners knowledge, being in dire financial straits but not disclosing this to your partner and the king of them all, being pregnant without disclosing this to your partner. Weve all been through this haven't we? Im beginning to come to the realisation that ive lived a very mundane and sheltered life yet this film makes me all the more thankful for that. This Is 40 leads on from Knocked Up which I have seen but it was a while ago and I remember that I didn't think that much of it except for a scene when the house was falling\burning down (maybe even both, I cant remember exactly) and the male lead saved his bong before saving his pregnant girlfriend. "Yeah, sounds downright hilarious Just" you are probably saying but it was one of those you really had to be there moments. Whilst writing this I am thinking the very same of this film. One stand out moment for me involving a scene with Melissa McCarthy and the principal of the school\college. Maybe it was just because Melissa McCarthy was in it as I find her funny in most things? The film starts with one or both of the couples birthdays with Debbie (the wife) deny this as hitting 40 is heinous. She employs a fitness instructor (as hitting 40 is heinous) who has a crush on her but she feels better about this in one scene when she goes to a bar with an employee of hers (Megan Fox) with the intention of confronting her about money missing from the shop that she owns? In the club she gets hit upon by a touring Baseball\Basketball\Fussball team and this makes her feel good about herself (as hitting 40 is heinous). You kinda get where I am coming from this. Her husband Pete isn't even sure that he even likes his wife anymore (let alone love her) and he has made the stupid decision to try to follow his dream of running his own record label (he used to work for Sony) by signing acts that he likes and this has put them under financial pressure. Add to this Petes Dad sucking him dry both emotionally and financially and Debbie barely knowing who her spine surgeon specialist Dad is? Both Pete and Debbies fathers have infant children themselves which adds to the insecurities on display and throw in the moody teenage daughter who nobody can either understand or relate to? In conclusion, you hit 40 and your life becomes heinous to the point where you are incapable of communicating with your partner or anyone else in your family. You alienate your parents and your children, except for the younger cute girl because she is both young and cute and isn't old enough yet to realise that you are 40 and heinous. Do not try to follow your dreams as you will fail due to a combination of your family dragging you down and that it's a pretty silly idea in the first place.

Light-hearted parenting sitcom that is entertaining enough albeit cheesy in an American way.
