After Max and Avery meet on a social media app for a first date, their evening takes a perilous turn when they end up at a local haunted house, the home of 'Rotcreep', a sinister creature that rots your body and soul with one touch. As the night turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse, Max and Avery begin to realize the trauma they share may either save them or erupt into an unforgettable nightmare. Written and directed by Robert Rippberger, THOSE WHO WALK AWAY is loosely inspired by the Ursula Le Guin short story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas". Filmed in a series of long continuous takes, Rippberger perfectly captures the eerie and bloodcurdling moral predicament of living high while others suffer.

This dark, haunted house tale boasts a great premise about the monsters we create through our choices. But the pacing makes it feel much longer than its 90-minute runtime, and there’s barely enough story to fill a short, much less a feature.

The pitfalls of ambition over substance are written all over this (ostensibly) haunted house movie, with the main effect being that, despite some strong visuals and moments of atmosphere, it labours under being very, very underwritten overall.

This film does a false one take, but it also does a lot of long takes that are careful, meticulous, and impressive. So the secondary acting isn't great, is that really what you're watching this for? Direction, cinematography, and set design are all cranked to 11, I don't really care if the acting was tough to believe.

I wasn't expecting much from this movie, but I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Get past the slow beginning and the eerie atmosphere and camera work gives some rally decent chills. A satisfying ending and unique camera work makes this pretty unique in my opinion. Well worth the watch.

I grew up in that small Illinois town, and I can tell you the first 30 minutes are genius, not just because of the smart script and outstanding acting, but because of the iconic, meandering path through the old downtown area. The opening is brilliant, and the haunted house part is fun and campy, especially for such a dark subject, which is, I'm guessing, child sexual abuse. The acting is great, the writing/directing is super-smart. I'm buying this, and I never buy movies.
