Tigerland

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ross Kauffman entwines the fate of beast and man alike in Tigerland, an impassioned and persuasive plea for the preservation of an endangered species that declines to sanitize the animals' often lethal power.

Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's really lovely. Sep 24, 2019 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal Nimbly negotiating its geography and parallel narratives, Tigerland is, on the one hand, a wildlife film by a filmmaker from outside that genre. The genre certainly benefits. Mar 28, 2019 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times "Tigerland" falls into a common trap of advocacy documentaries, which is to inform on an urgent issue - preserving a species - without a particularly urgent cinematic narrative to match it. Mar 28, 2019 Full Review Cole Henry Nonfics The film comes to feel so insular yet so immensely important and at times even delves into thriller territory. Mar 27, 2019 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Though Kauffman is not always successful in balancing his two primary stories, this is still an interesting film which delivers a good balance of information, anecdote and observation. For tiger lovers, it's a must. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 25, 2019 Full Review Louis Proyect Counterpunch.org Ultimately, the struggle to save the tiger is tied to the struggle to save humanity. A valuable, beautiful and troubling film. Mar 22, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Outstanding, compelling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member I wanted so badly to love this documentary. And while I enjoyed it, I found the overall scope of the movie was....anticlimactic. It was certainly informative, but also more of a human study of 2 people (and their families who may well follow in their giant footsteps) who have dedicated their lives to saving this majestic, yet terrifying creature. Even now, I canï¿ 1/2(TM)t quite pinpoint what I found lacking, but I was left with a ï¿ 1/2~thatï¿ 1/2(TM)s it?ï¿ 1/2Â? feeling, and an urge to know more. Perhaps thatï¿ 1/2(TM)s what the makers had in mind, to provoke an interest into wanting more by finding ways to contribute to this incredibly important cause, to BE more than an armchair conservationist. Of course, the end of this story isnï¿ 1/2(TM)t written I suppose, but I do know how I want it to end. Well done. #WorldWildlifeFund Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member great documentary that really opens your eyes to the problem today with the tiger population and what is being done to correct it.
