There are so many people here, and so many places and things happening to them, that it is possible to lose track of some of them on a first viewing. Leaburn O An astonishingly good film for one that has drifted away from the cinematic consciousness. It plays out as a Yugoslav gypsy version of the Godfather, by turns both comedic and dark, as well as mildly supernatural. The score is outstanding as well. A real gem that deserves a greater audience. I couldn't find in streaming services, whilst the DVD is outrageously pricey but I was able to rent this one from Amazon prime. I'd love one day to add it to my collection though. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/23 Full Review Mt S It's unusual for me these days to watch a movie and not look at the time. I didn't check the time during this movie. An irregular and universal experience to watch. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/23 Full Review William L 🎵 It's the Time of the Gypsies When the Love Runs High 🎵 This is only the second film I've seen from Serbian director Emir Kusturica (after Underground), but a pattern is starting to emerge in his work stylistically, focusing on tragicomic magic realism and stories driven through character interaction as much as plot. Time of the Gypsies is nominally about the evolution of a single character, but is representative of a larger social community (its idiosyncrasies, charms, and struggles). The writer-director really comes into his own with the way he integrates very human interpretations to both individual people as well as his storytelling - Davor Dujmović's Perhan is not a perfect individual by any means, but that does not make his suffering any less empathetic. Simultaneously, the screenplay is constantly genre-hopping with the shifts in tone, bouncing back and forth between pure drama and surprisingly visual comedy. All the while there is the consistent possibility that the surrealism introduced at the beginning of the film will wind its way back to the front of the camera, imparting a degree of unpredictability. Did Kusturica inspire Hideo Kojima to include the cardboard box as a disguise in the Metal Gear Solid series? We can only guess, but I like to think that yes, the Japanese game developer has a soft spot for Serbian cinema that he wanted to reference in his stealth action series. (4/5) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/09/22 Full Review pepe l Perhaps the saddest movie ever made? but a masterpiece nonetheless. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review s r Certainly different, but I loved it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review nefasto r Another great work from Kusturica. A powerful story, great characters and that touch of weirdness and magic that he can dose so well in many of his movies. For me his magnum opus is "Underground" but this dark comedy-drama got closer then I would have imagined. Goran Bregovi? and his music, of course, is always part of the equation!
