Uber S anyone who gives this film a horrible rating obviously is not a Tolkien fan on any level. this was one of the most beautiful films i've seen in a LONG time. people claim it didnt show his inspirations, when it did in fact do so. the zone between trenches were the Dead Marshes, he literally had a faithful follower in WWI named Sam, it displayed the love between a man destined for greatness and a beautiful woman whom others did not want said relationship to happen. the relation between a religious figure and tolkien (Lord Elrond and Aragorn). it showed the bright star which tolkien looked upon while in the war, the light of elendil, the elves' most beloved star. the ONLY critique i would give it would be when they showed tolkien discovering his mother who had passed. the emotion of the moment could have been portrayed better. otherwise, this film was beautiful in so many aspects! The characters lack depth—I didn’t sense any real grief in Tolkien when he learns of Geoffrey’s death. Nicholas Hoult does what he can, but he’s constrained by a script that portrays Tolkien as a flawless, tragic genius, rather than a complex human being. If you’re looking for a more compelling and nuanced biography, I strongly recommend the graphic novel "Tolkien: Lighting Up the Darkness". It never really focused on Tolkien and his philosophy. or even his inspirations. This movie is bad. basic in every sense of the word. A non fiction version of lord of the rings that does not understand what made it good. Not of it leads up to the conclusion where he writes the hobbit. And even then I think it would've been better if it was less of a romance drama and more about his actual works. bad. 1/10. This is a fantastic bio pic about one of the best writers of our time . From when Tolkien was a boy, to the TCBS , coming up with the Elvish language early on , the pre sketches of the Middle Earth map, to him meeting Edith , going to Oxford , going into WW1 and then his becoming a professor and starting to write the Hobbit . If he would of gotten killed in WW1 there be no Hobbit or LOTR. This is a 10/10 EPIC FANTASTIC movie and I always look forward to watching it every Dec before starting The Hobbit and LOTR movies.
