Empire Magazine A treat for lovers of political (and personal) intrigue and intricate, dialogue driven stories, this is a great piece of work. Rated: 4/5 Apr 1, 2006 Full Review Stephen Holden New York Times If Triple Agent is an impressive docudrama, it lacks the warmth and flow of this filmmaker's best, earlier movies. Rated: 3/5 Nov 13, 2004 Full Review Jamie Russell BBC.com Focusing in on Fyodor and Arsinoé, Rohmer manoeuvres the espionage theme through sitting room and bedroom, distilling the tumultuous events of 20th century history into an intimate drama about the psychology of trust and deceit. Rated: 4/5 Nov 13, 2004 Full Review Tom Dawson The List It's an undeniably dialogue-heavy film, but the performances are assured and it's shot and directed with elegant simplicity. Rated: 3/5 Apr 23, 2019 Full Review Daniel Kasman d+kaz. intelligent movie reviews Rated: B- Feb 28, 2005 Full Review Doug Cummings Filmjourney In some ways, it's a refreshing corrective to Rohmer's previous work, a movie about the dangers of political naiveté despite the relative comforts of art and love. Audience Member A film that deals with huge subjects through small and intimate spaces. Almost claustrophobic and overbearing but ultimately rewarding. The script is sometimes a little sludgy and the direction occasionally over done but still a fine film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member well crafted period/political drama Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Atmospheric and well-acted, it is a clever film every cinephile should see. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Built around true events from the eve of WWII, âTriple Agent❠is set in France during the end of the 1930â(TM)s, a stage for cloak and dagger plotting, political intrigue and hidden operations for all the major powers. One would think that with such ingredients a film would easily succeed in creating a fascinating story, but in the end âTriple Agent❠is basically a combination of excellent ingredients mixed together without too much conviction or arrangement. Yes, the film is historically quite fascinating, but the powder-keg-about-to-explode setting doesnâ(TM)t really get conveyed. Hereâ(TM)s a sum of good parts that as a whole remains underwhelming, mildly disappointing even. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member He accomplished probably what he wanted: a spy movie without suspense, action, or intrigue. More of a dialogue than a movie, this film does nothing special with the cinematography and plain bores the pants off of me. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member An un-glamorous spy story set in France against the backdrop of political upheavals of late 1930's. It's based on a real-life story of Nikolai Skoblin (look it up on Wikipedia if interested). The movie, while generating some suspense, relies on dialogue and long discussion of politics, don't expect anything like a James Bond movie.
