As the Atlanta Braves have the first pick in the upcoming draft, jobs are on the line if they get it wrong. One of them in particular belongs to Gus Lobel(Clint Eastwood), a longtime scout. His health problems, that extend beyond his trouble urinating to his poor eyesight which might in fact be glaucoma, could interfere with his ability to do his job properly. Worried about him, his semi-estranged daughter Mickey(Amy Adams), a lawyer on the partner track, takes time off from a very important case to help with her father on the road. Even with outcry, outrage and the rending of baseball jerseys from baseball statheads about not only how they are portrayed in film(in this case, Matthew Lillard but what can you do?), it should be noted over their objections that "The Trouble with the Curve" does get it right when it points out how one cannot rely on statistics alone to evaluate baseball players. And that's the only thing this otherwise cliched, predictable and illogical movie gets right. That also includes its dated views on career women, while the fact that women can love baseball is certainly nothing new. It is a shame because the movie wastes a fine cast that also includes John Goodman and Robert Patrick that Justin Timberlake surprisingly holds his own with. All of which serves as a reminder why Amy Adams badly deserves a movie of her very own.

Despite his politics, Eastwood is one of my all-time movie heroes. I'm able to separate the man from his art . . . that's not what I mean. I'm able to keep his politics separate from his art. This is a nearly perfect work of art. And kudos to Justin Timberlake.

Clint and Amy shine, but the film isn't a home run. I felt like I have seen this type of film before. It was predictable, especially the ending. The pacing was off. On a positive, Eastwood and Adams have a great on screen chemistry together. Goodman, Patrick, Lillard provide solid supporting work here. Timberlake seems miscast here. He has no chemistry with either Eastwood or Adams. Overall, I would say see it for Eastwood and Adams' performances.

Horribly predictable, but somehow still very good, mostly due to the fantastic chemistry between Eastwood, Adams, Goodman, and Timberlake. It's rare for a cast to seem this realistic. I'd mostly recommend this to baseball fans since it gets pretty technical at times, but that doesn't mean that anyone can't enjoy it.
