Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies There's no denying that Gary Sinise does a marvelous job in Truman but the story would be better told as a miniseries than a wide-ranging biopic. Audience Member The greatest 2.5 hours ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review jon c Based on the biography by David McCullough this HBO TV movie follows one of the most famous candidates in U.S. history Gary Sinise takes the title role with such class, sternness, likability, and authority The movie opens in 1942 with Harry S. Truman on the peak of the election before World War II following the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Writing letters to Bess, his beloved he asks himself why would anyone want to be President in the first place? Flashing back to Truman's early days in 1917 he enlists into the army during WWI, he also utilizes his farming skills to help his county folk, he's elected as Senator perfectly content where he is even though he wasn't allowed to say anything about the Manhattan Project Unexpectedly he comes Vice President bearing the heavy responsibility of what to do during WWII even to authorizing the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, there was so much weighing on him but he had full support of his wife and daughter Truman wanted to better the world by any means from advocating for civil rights to supporting worker protesters to handling the oil issue in the Middle East, even the war in Korea proves to be difficult with McArthur taking matters into his own hands on the battlefield the movie is overly long and plods in several spots and maybe the makeup effects aren't the most convincing but it is Gary Sinise who sells it as one of the nation's most influential figures in the White House Harry Truman's own words still ring to this day, if we don't make a mistake how can we create a paradise for this world? a worthy biopic of a great man played by a great actor Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review steve d A bit slow but rewording. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Sometimes Hollywood rewrites history and Truman tries it's best to do so. Though Gary Sinese portrays Truman well the facts of history totally derail the film. The film proposes the concept that Truman reluctantly dropped the bomb and was a gentle man with little vices or faults. Truman's outspoken nature is nowhere to be found nor are the attempts of Japan reaching out diplomatically in desperation before the bomb was dropped is nowhere. There was no history about his father who used to treat young Truman like a weak runt which created a complex that Truman constantly expressed to hide his weak insecurities. There was nothing at all about the democratic convention where Truman was brought onto the vice president ballot over Wallace by backroom deals and voting disruptions. If a movie omits all these facts and creates an innocent narration of the character it is hard to suspend disbelief. It's obvious as you read this that I am biased on this one because I read books on history (especially presidential history and WWII) a week. Is the film entertaining, sure. Is it incorrect, yes. How you reconcile the film is open for everyone and your opinion is just as important as mine, however for me when a film says based on True events I don't enjoy SPIN on such stories. I suggest reading a book on Truman, especially anything with William Wallace involved to see the entire True story on Truman. If you want to check out and watch a fair political film then this one can pass I guess. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Scott W Pretty well done movie ... Especially by the two lead actors ... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/16 Full Review Audience Member A nice dramatization of the 33rd President of the United States. No wonder it earned several awards and nominations. It's even based on a book of the same name that won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for "Biography or Autobiography."
