Twilight's Last Gleaming is above all a suspense film and the music is what keeps us in its grip - the music and Robert Aldrich's professionalism. Go to Full Review

B
Intelligent sociopolitical thriller that is effective despite being overlong, stiffly acted and executing a rather nutty plot. Go to Full Review

Steve D 08/12/2023 Slow depressing and not at all interesting. See more 08/31/2021 Worst movie EVER by Burt Lancaster. I'd rather sit through Howard The Duck. Comes off as a low budget indie movie, even for a 1970's flick. See more 03/29/2021 Ok, This film is dated, from the late 70s. It's too long, to begin with. I'm no prude, but the language is awful -- can you imagine Burt Lancaster saying the MF word? I watched it because of the cast, especially Charlie McGraw, my favorite film noir guy, and wonderful Richard Widmark, who made the film palatable for me. You know the film is bad when you only see what the director was attempting to do. See more 03/14/2017 Marred by dialogue-heavy scenes and an endurance test of duration. Like Taking of Pelham 123, I feel I will gain more from repeated viewings. Charles Durning is perfect as the sacrificial lamb in a corrupt world. It's all very good. But for the aforementioned, it could have received warmer reviews by first-time viewers, (like me). As a second-time viewer, I feel exactly the same. Could easily lose half an hour of chat and a much cleverer designed bomb coming out of a chopper. See more 11/26/2016 With elements from The Rock (20 years later) and Dog Day Afternoon (about a year or two prior), Twilight's Last Gleaming gave a convincingly good movie about a terrorist who takes control of a Nuclear weapon's silo (like The Rock did at Alcatraz) and demands political revelations in exchange for thousands of lives. The enemy, a disgruntled former army sergeant (again, Ed Harris in The Rock should ring a bell), uses prior knowledge to infiltrate the silo and ask for the puppet president's voice to make scandalous political inquiries that will have a major impact on the political landscape. We learn how expendable the US President is. Somewhat slow at times, but for a 1976 film, it was a decent enough movie. See more 07/05/2013 A "progressive", pre-Reaganite (and post-JFK--triangulation of fire!), post-Vietnam, nuclear, alchemy of revolution fantasy-thriller, that wants both to disbelieve and believe in the American political and military leadership, and in American democracy. Featuring good use of the split screen. See more Read all reviews
