Initially at odds, the two prisoners of war bond and plot an escape. The white robes they use as camouflage in the snow-covered landscape make them look like Arabs. Louisa E This movie had some funny moments, with my favourite being the scene with the goats. There were some good tense scenes like with the barbed wire, the knocked board, and the Russian roulette encounter. But overall, I found it a bit boring. I love Louis Wolheim and he was good in this but it didn't save the movie overall. Out of the two comedy movies nominated, I preferred Speedy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Boyd and Wolheim start out as US POWs trying to escape Germans during WW 1. Eventually they find themselves on board a ship bound for Arabia. They rescue an Arab woman, Mary Astor, who turns out to be a Princess and a romantic triangle ensues. The film is well photographed and directed. Wolheim stands out for his performance. The story isn't as strong as it could be. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member A charming comedy from Hollywood Master Lewis Milestone who went only on 2.5 years later to make his masterpiece an anti WWI film called All Quiet on the Western Front. I have recently found his first silent feature Seven Sinner (1925) in Australia & I was keen to see his silent work...this particular film is a delightful comedy about two POW who escape an War Camp as Arabs & accidentally land in Turkey. The humor is predictable but the film is fun & moves along nicely...Mary Astor unbelievably portrays an Arab Woman but who cares she is the damsel in distress...a fun comedy that's worth a watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A beautiful movie. So glad it was recovered. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member It was ok, I didn't really find it very funny though. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent silent film by Lewis Milestone about two soldiers from WWI who become POWs and manage to escape to Arabia. Very amusing with some hilarious moments throughout (I loved the joke with their frozen white gowns). There are some pretty amazing moments as well, the first scene of the film where the two soldiers are fighting in the pit and the Germans surround them is quite incredible. This won Milestone Best Director for a Comedy Picture at the first Oscars (the only time the award was given). Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
