Audience Member This is a bit of a slow building movie about a man with a sordid past whom has no home, money or papers and is stuck in Canada. It's a bit of a slow building movie but it becomes interesting when he meets a small kid, much like himself. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I screened this movie for the Cinefranco film festival, and I enjoyed the nurturing relationship between the kid and Pierre Lebeau's aging refugee/aid worker, Un Cargo Pour L'Afrique takes WAY too long to gain traction. At a brisk 90 minutes, the first hour is slow and the pacing is tedious to bear with. Once these two people began to understand each other, their individual isolation and desire for family, the bond strengthens the movie but at the cost of too little time at the end. Fortunately, the ending is strong. Pierre Lebeau, who plays an aging African aid worker called Norbert Da Costa, just wants to return home. Ironically, he finds his family in an unlikely source, which is the snot-nosed kid that you WILL hate in the beginning (cuz he's a real dick). What I really enjoyed, and as a surprise twist, is the use of personification. Death plays a HUGE role here, and when the conclusion occurs, death's primary role is revealed, and its satisfying. However, the dramatic build-up that brings the kid and aid worker together, and the whole quest to find that damn monkey a home, really wore me down. I felt this stuff should have been cut down, with more emphasis with Norbert's journey home to Quebec. Overall, it was a marginal disapointment as a story-driven movie, but it ends strong as a character piece. A good, solid ending partially makes up for a drab start. Check out the Cinefranco film festival in Toronto for more fancy French film festival frenzy!!!! muhahahaha Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
