Bitcoin has been controversial since its mysterious release by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008. Some say Bitcoin is only comprised of a small minority of anarchist computer nerds, or that it supports criminal activity as just another Ponzi scheme. Others herald the arrival of Bitcoin as financial freedom for the masses after years of abuse by a centralized banking cartel. Passionate views surround this ethereal yet hard-to-ignore beacon-or-bust proposition. Is Bitcoin a myth or a pathway to mass monetary self-determination? We are living in a day and age where Bitcoin promises what more and more people claim they want: disintermediation, decentralization, freedom from transactional parasites, restoration of trust in peer-to-peer interaction and commerce, and a possible exit from the financial cartels who hold all the coins. There has never been a viable alternative. Until now. Is Bitcoin a house of cards waiting to collapse? Or is it exactly what is needed as governments and central bankers siphon fees and funds from savers and debase fiat currency?

The best part of the entire film – whether by accident or design – is the closing shot of a sign that reads “Beware of possible alligators”. Beware, indeed. Go to Full Review

A fascinating and informative watch, especially for those who have been unable to fathom the very idea of Bitcoin and the future it holds. Go to Full Review

Unbanked offers an intriguing, if somewhat one-sided and simplified, glimpse into what might be the future of money. It could've been less biased and taken a more unconventional approach but it's a decent entry point into a complicated concept. Go to Full Review

Unbanked isn’t really a documentary at all. It’s a painfully biased, tone-deaf promotional video for the entire crypto industry. Go to Full Review

Unbanked is a decent bitcoin primer, but it certainly would have benefitted from a contrarian point of view to ask the tough questions to help determine if this shiny new currency really is as good as gold. Go to Full Review

“Unbanked” ultimately operates as both primer and persuasion, reflecting the filmmakers’ discovery process while inviting audiences to question — or perhaps embrace — the promises of decentralization, autonomy, and financial revolution. Go to Full Review
