Roger Moore Orlando Sentinel An effective blend of thriller and horror. Rated: 4/5 May 13, 2009 Full Review Kim Newman Empire Magazine Poor remake of the Korean thriller. Rated: 2/5 Apr 24, 2009 Full Review Nigel Floyd Time Out As in the original, the film slyly manipulates the audience's perspective, and a brilliantly filmed climactic 'reveal' marks this British duo as a pair to watch. Jeffrey P Seen this before, never reviewed it, forgot most of it - including that I’d seen it (and that may not be the first time that's happened to me with this title.) I’d already turned it on so I figured I’d do the review, and I did so because one thing I do remember is that it isn’t horrible. The mystery and suspense are both well paced and focused, the psychological horror aspect of it was good, the blending of it with the supernatural aspect, not so much. The acting all around was solid enough to make the questionable blend of sub-genres palatable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Audience Member Reheating bland leftovers, masquerading as a horror film but delivering nothing more than a forgettable, lifeless experience. The movie stumbles through a predictable plot with twists that are painfully obvious, while the characters feel like hollow shells just going through the motions. The intended scares barely register, and even the atmosphere fails to breathe any life into the story. Ultimately, it’s a film so uninspired and unmemorable that you might find yourself looking for any excuse to leave the room. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Blu B So for 90% of the runtime it isn't half bad. It's got some decent acting, every now and than some decent shots in it, and overall it's not bad building some degree of suspense and maintaining it the whole way which was pretty suprising. There is 2 issues here. First while it has suspense, it NEVER is scary. It's all predictable jump scares, fake outs, and just isn't really ever creepy at all. It clearly is trying to be both tense AND scary right from the start and it only accomplishes half it's goal. Second...the twist. It's alright but it's not really that obvious and kind of doesn't make that much sense if you think about it. Movies like Oldboy (The Foreign One) and The Others from this decade did their twists SIGNIFCANTLY better than this and looking back left plenty of clues that looking back make the twist sooo good. This has SOME clues but it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense but KIND of does. Overall it's made alright all around it's just a shame the twist doesn't deliver. This is kind of a higher production value Lifetime movie with the twist and all. The setting reminds me a lot of What Lies Beneath too. I can see some people who haven't seen a lot of thrillers thinking the twist is mind bending Sixth Sense stuff. But if you've seen enough of these even if you don't see it coming, it doesn't really do much. Most could skip This. There are better thrillers/horror flicks for those that haven't seen a lot of these to spend your time on. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review DV t A great film with an excellent twist at the end. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/28/24 Full Review Bahad j The movie was a very exciting adventure from start to finish Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Audience Member 15 years later This was just okay yet for the longest time I didn't know it was another Japanese horror remake A terrific cast composed of Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, Elizabeth Banks, and David Strathairn A young teenage girl Anna can't remember an incident years ago and her mother sadly died being sick She ended up leaving her sister Alex alone with her father He found a new girlfriend Rachel and she's now adjusting to the change coming back home But Alex and Anna start to suspect something fishy about Rachel, she has no record of her employment history and her intentions might be less than genuine Both sisters have to find out the truth all the while Anna is seeing ghostly apparitions There is strong acting and some steady direction by Charles & Thomas Guard I won't lie I did get a few scares in the process; they have great use of the dark lighting and shadowy corners Banks plays the condescending girlfriend pretty well; she's beautiful but also unpredictable The twist is actually clever and unexpected Although when you really think about how everything transpires the supernatural elements aren't really needed and make no sense in the grand scheme of things It's generic at best but still watchable Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/30/24 Full Review Read all reviews
