Critics Consensus

Untamed Heart offers moderately moving evidence of just how much a flawed screenplay can be elevated by the right cast -- and how sometimes, it still isn't quite enough.

Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle A low-key, beguiling romance set in a Minneapolis diner. Tomei Is outstanding as a waitress attracted to Slater's character, a gentle, hulking bus- boy too shy to speak. Carlos I Oh it's a sappy one. There are some engaging bits and moments of sweetness, but I fear a lot of it is just going to be deemed "problematic" by a modern audience. Which will make them less accepting of the more storybook elements. But this is peak era Slater and Tomei and I would watch them in anything. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Mike P Dumb movie which hasn't aged very well. Christian Slater is a "Boo Radley" type with a baboon heart; Marisa is a sad girl from the wrong side of the track- a damsel in distress that needs saving; and Rosie is her bitchy best friend with a big mouth.... Blah blah blah... Not recommended Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review Danielle H This movie has so many problematic moments. He's supposed to be moody and in touch with his feelings, but his behavior is wildly inappropriate. He admits to breaking into her home and watching her sleep on multiple occasions. Yeah, not romantic. He doesn't want life saving surgery because it's his "heart" what if it changes how he loves? It's an internal organ…what? They start dating the day before Christmas Eve, when he dies everyone is still in winter coats. What's it been 2 months total? They are head over heels in love!!! Heavy with 90's dramatic romantic movie crap. But Marisa Tomei is gorgeous and a great actor. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review Steve D Love Story without the script. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Director Tony Bill makes a modern love story starring Marisa Tomei, Christian Slater, and Rosie Perez Simple enough story of boy meets girl, boy falls in love then tragedy ends up striking Caroline just broke up with her boyfriend and works in a diner She has her waitress buddy Cindy and a new bus boy Adam in the back kitchen After she leaves her shift one night she is suddenly attacked and raped by a group of men But Adam ends up saving her life and from there a cute romance starts to sparkle It seems happy enough but little does she know that he has a heart condition Will their love be cut so short? Cindy asks her what she’s doing yet Caroline views herself not making sense just like him so in a way they both make sense together You can still live with your mind and soul not just your heart Beautiful music and Tomei and Slater have such sweet chemistry This screenplay is flawed but utterly sweet and romantic being elevated by a terrific cast It also mediates on the concept of soulmates and a melancholy mood around the holidays This is a romance with a dreamlike quality in a cold world Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Ashein C Although the main characters relationship with each other is questionable. I can't help but keep coming back to this cheesy movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
