What to Know

Critics Consensus

Consistently unnerving as it cycles through a series of shorts that are more treat than trick, V/H/S Halloween is one of the most purely enjoyable cassettes in the franchise yet.

Richard Whittaker Austin Chronicle It may well be the franchise’s best of the decade. Oct 3, 2025 Full Review Nick Schager The Daily Beast [Its] vignettes are uneven and occasionally repetitive and yet, at their best, deliver the sort of macabre mood and mayhem that make the series an enduring spooky-season pleasure. Oct 3, 2025 Full Review David Ehrlich IndieWire All of the bits are diverting enough, and even the weakest among them boast spooktacular effects, but only one of them leverages Halloween into something creepier than empty calories. Rated: C+ Oct 2, 2025 Full Review John Daniel Tangalin The Cosmic Circus With Paco Plaza driving his characters to death from life, most of the other storytellers strive to take their characters to horrifying truths at a descent from decency. The monster that one becomes by the end is the only thing that matters. Oct 19, 2025 Full Review Aaron Neuwirth We Live Entertainment Not sure what will be tackled next year, but the joy of this anthology entry gave me more than just a candy-fueled sugar rush. Rated: 7/10 Oct 16, 2025 Full Review Kiko Martinez The Cinesnob Podcast There are fun [shorts] and ones that don't hit. I'm on board with all the practical effects. tm11999 M for those that are horrified by this movie, surely you understand what you're getting. weird AND gorey the stories are twisted. a little too much girl screaming and the peeps should learn to defend themselves. all in all you can watch this. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Phantom 9 The movie did not offer anything outstanding, candidly. It is very normal for the vast majority of found footage horror movies to result in subpar quality, and this offering is right on track with it. I never expect any game-changing aspects; however, it did go the distance in disappointing. The acting seemed contrived, the CGI appeared rough, and the storyline was painfully predictable from start to finish. It failed to offer suspense, atmosphere, and any real terror. Unlike previous VHS found footage films that at least had some form of charm or innovation, this offering felt very impassive and easily forgettable. Nothing sets it apart, and it is hard to find any reason to recommend it. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Fer O In my opinion, more gore ≠ good. The latest entry in the V/H/S franchise takes the Halloween concept and runs with it—unfortunately, not always in the right direction. While the idea of an anthology centered around the season is appealing, the execution feels uneven. Most of the shorts rely heavily on blood and guts, yet somehow fail to create a truly unsettling atmosphere. What made the original V/H/S films memorable was their ability to blend tension, mystery, and the raw, voyeuristic feel of found footage. That formula still carries intrigue, but here it often feels secondary to shock value. The stories have potential, but many lose focus beneath the layers of gore instead of building dread or narrative impact. Overall, V/H/S/ Halloween is a mixed bag—visually intense but emotionally hollow. It’s a reminder that horror works best when fear comes from atmosphere and storytelling, not just the amount of blood on screen. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Sergio A I honestly don’t understand film critics when it comes to horror, they always seem to go against the audience. The anthology feels worn out and, at times, it’s even more ridiculous than an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Movie R. The character that conducts the soda tests in the lab is hilarious. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Dave B. While not the best VHS entry, it may be one of the strongest entries the series has created in a long time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
