Audience Member A pre-Free Solo climbing doc that definitely holds it own. There are a lot of pros and cons to a documentary as all-encompassing as this. It's focused on Yosemite climbers rather than climbing as a whole, but going from the 50's all the way to the mid 2010's is just so much territory to cover in depth. It loses a bit of focus as a result of this. However, having so much information packed into 90 minutes is pretty remarkable and Valley Uprising provides a crystal clear picture of climbing in Yosemite over the last few generations. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review dave v Excellent documentary even for non-climbers like myself who gets sweaty palms just seeing heights! A great historical portrait of modern rock climbing beginning in the 50's in Yosemite. It's scary, funny, entertaining, educational, .. Very well presented with excellent photography and interviews. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An amazing look at the history of rock climbing at Yosemite. It starts the story back in the '50s (using actual footage and pictures) and goes right up to present day (including Alex Hommolt from Free Solo fame). It gets into to counter culture movement, the constant battles with park rangers and the tricks used to skirt the law. For any fan of climbing this is a must watch because Yosemite is the K2 of rock climbing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I have seen Free Solo, Meru, Touching the Void and few other rock climbing movies. This is my favorite. It was nice seeing this after free solo since that movie hooks you in and this one gives you the history. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/19 Full Review Audience Member One of my all-time favorite documentaries. It's informative, fascinating, funny and above all else gets me the hell excited for climbing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member This documentary comes closest to answering the age old question, 'why do you climb,' with a visually breathtaking affirmation: because its there. Exploring the relationship between climbers and the rock face, against the backdrop of contemporary American history, the one fingered response is as eloquent in a thin finger-crack as it is in the face of the Park rangers. The climbing scene in Yosemite is peopled by remarkable individuals, men (mostly) whose greatest acts of rebellion are to believe unequivocally in their vision and their abilities. The result is a eulogy of the human spirit, of men for whom the rock face is their backbone and moral compass. This is a beautiful piece of film-making.
