Audience Member ******A British horror-comedy starring the Old Mother Riley character along with Bela Lugosi, in his final film role dressed as a vampire as he plays Baron Van Housen, a mad scientist (who uses vampirism as his supervillain trope). Horror films had yet to take hold in England (interest in such waned post-WW2, and was never strong in the UK before that), so the makeup was much more comedy than horror. This was filmed in the sunset of Lugosi's career, but his performance is much stronger than his other mad scientist roles of the '50s ("The Boys from Brooklyn", "Bride of the Monster"); despite being played for laughs, he acts as well as he did in earlier comparable roles found in "Zombies on Broadway", "Return of the Ape Man", "Devil Bat", etc. I don't imagine I'd find much Old Mother Riley enjoyable outside of this one film, but it is fun and unique as European horror-comedies were far from commonplace at this time (and had started to fall out of favour stateside as well, though gaining in popularity in Mexico).
