Derek Owen Time Out It's hard to dislike a movie that strives so hard to offend the vampire fan base. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times It is to be recommended only if you can see it at the New Amsterdam on 42d Street, where audiences loudly, freely and obscenely associate with the action on the screen. May 9, 2005 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader A highly intelligent, deftly poetic reimagining of the vampire myth, with the theme of fatal sexuality transferred to a female character. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) Rothman’s film is exactly what you would want from a psychedelic sexploitation film set in the middle of the Southern California desert. Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Noah Berlatsky Splice Today The Velvet Vampire isn’t just by a female director; it’s about the possibilities of female creation, spectatorship, and fantasy in a genre and an industry that haven’t allowed much space for them. Feb 11, 2023 Full Review Sean Burns Crooked Marquee A titillating semiotic exercise, sending up gender roles and inverting the vampire mythos with results both provocative and ridiculous. Sometimes simultaneously. Oct 7, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Dallas H It is a cheesy production about a widow vampire living in the California desert who bides some of her time creeping on a newlywed couple. The acting from the couple is corny and a step up from being amateurish. I appreciated the movie for being campy. It is produced and distributed by Roger Corman's newly created New World Pictures company, an iconic stamp of indie distribution for horror movies for a few decades. Upon my first viewing, I neither hated nor loved the film. I am in neutral territory at the moment. A second viewing later might push me over the edge to either side. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review CodyZamboni Movie is silly soft core porn / tame horror film, set in the desert. Lots of unskilled actors trying their best to sell this mess. That said, the lead lady vampire is very attractive. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Some commentators say that this a feminist spin on the vampire genre, but it struck me as mostly clumsily edited soft porn. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Strange and Very 70's Flick with a Vampire Afterthought--Mostly nostalgic!! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member I honestly still don't know if I liked this fuckin' movie or not, even updating my ratings/watched films months after the fact. I enjoyed watching it and found it somewhat entertaining if only for the random nudity and meandering storyline, but Holy Moses, it's not a horror film by a long shot, and it's never even remotely scary, so what the hell do you make of it? Weird. Rental? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member A trippy, weird, and not terribly-good (or bad) movie about a strangely unattractive married couple (sorry Michael Blodgett & Sherry Miles) who fall prey to the desert dealings of Celeste Yarnell's Velvet Vampire...yeah I don't know what that means either. The film is chockablock with nonsensical dialog that left me scratching my head when I wasn't downright laughing. Fun, but no way am I gonna remember a single thing about this come next week. VF.
