Deborah Ross The Spectator This is a slight film, a minor Allen film, a bit of a footnote, but it's warm and engaging and isn't Matchpoint, Scoop or Cassandra's Dream, which has to be a mercy. Aug 29, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Penelope's performance is a little sterotypoical, but fantastic... Rated: B+ Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine Allen seems uninterested in pushing his material beyond impersonally generic, or even in thinking things through. Feb 6, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review [Rebecca Hall] steals the movie from the trio of well-known stars on the poster. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 6, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The movie is never as funny or as clever as it tries to be, and it ultimately falls apart in its nonsensical third act. Rated: 2/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site The worst aspect of Vicky Cristina Barcelona is its attitude toward art and creativity, which is entirely superficial. Design B Vicky Cristina Barcelona feels less like a genuine story set in Spain and more like a glossy travel brochure through the eyes of a wealthy tourist. Instead of showing the grit and complexity of real life, the film offers a caramel-coated fantasy version of the country, complete with glitzy villas, endless wine-sipping, and art talk that sounds more like Woody Allen’s cocktail-party musings than anything grounded in reality. Nearly every character is reduced to a mouthpiece for Allen’s pseudo-intellectual observations, speaking and moving with his trademark mannerisms—making the film feel less like a story and more like Allen in conversation with himself. The dialogue, particularly among the female characters, comes off as contrived, almost like Allen’s projection of what women must think and talk about. The Spanish characters, most notably the passionate artist and his tempestuous ex-wife, are written as broad clichés rather than fully realized people. Their exaggerated behavior borders on caricature, and what could have been layered portraits of cultural and personal conflict instead devolves into stereotypes. In the end, Vicky Cristina Barcelona is beautiful to look at, but its shallow worldview and hollow characters make it more an advertisement for sun-soaked escapism than a film with substance. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review William L A fun romp with talented actors, witty dialogue but unsatisfying ending Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/14/25 Full Review Brian D 66%. 5/11/25. Sort of a strange story about 2 girls traveling in Barcelona, one's single and the other is engaged and them both falling for a Spanish artist who has a messy past with his ex-wife. Penelope Cruz is pretty funny as the crazy ex. Like the setting in Barcelona. Vicky is kind of funny initially when she's trashing Juan Antonio. Decent watch, no need to rewatch. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Benedetta V A beautiful and engaging film, but not recommended for those having relationship issues with their partner (lol). The locations are stunning, and Penélope Cruz is spectacular in the role of the crazy wife. Definitely not one of Woody Allen's best films, but it's worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Pip S Woody, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson... It already sounds great. A delightfully beautiful film and a life that most male artists surely dream of. *Personally if I suggested something like Javier in the restaurant where the two friends are sitting, I would probably be showered with wine in the face.
