Critics Consensus

The Village is appropriately creepy, but Shyamalan's signature twist ending disappoints.

Emily St. James Vox It all comes to a head... in perhaps the greatest sequence Shyamalan has ever filmed. Jan 24, 2019 Full Review Namrata Joshi Outlook Shyamalan's films never send that chill up the bone on a second viewing. Worse, with Signs and The Village even the first viewing is becoming a bit of a yawn. Rated: 2/4 Jan 7, 2019 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek The entire solemn, portentous edifice that is The Village collapses of its own fake weight. Mar 13, 2018 Full Review Pablo Staricco Cadenazzi Vague Visages I do think this is one of Shyamalan’s most accomplished works, and one that should be more recognized for the talent it shows behind and in front of the camera. Dec 14, 2023 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh What it lacks in genuine terror it more than makes up for in a creepy atmosphere and a compelling love story. Rated: 4/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Akos Peterbencze Vulnerable Man (Medium) Shyamalan employs mystery and obscurity along the way but only to serve the plot, not derail it. It’s a necessary element to emphasize trauma and grief, which are such essential focal points throughout. Jul 22, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Max W The Village showcases M. Night Shyamalan's signature storytelling style. While the story is simple, its execution is highly polished. With a smooth pacing that builds gradually, it delivers a thoroughly satisfying adventure. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Sams K Very good one! Tension, sensational plot twist, great acting and directing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Jah F It's hard to figure why this work was panned by media critics, other than perhaps that it ruffled some feathers as a allegory about how we let fear control our lives and decisions in a "post-9/11 world", much in the same manner that societies who feared monsters and witchcraft once did. It's a well-sown-together story that with ample surprises and a compelling ending, delivered by strong writing and acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Audience Member It's not a horror film for sure but it does offer scary moments. The mind is what's scary when it gets out of control... The ending is well... watch it and form your own opinion. They certainly saved money on special effects on this one.. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Mary P After many years of re-watching this movie annually so it never loses its magic, this one remains a favorite this household. For the record: We don't care if it's realistic or not We recognize the plot holes. We see that there are logic problems. Still don't care. What makes this movie work for us is our view of it as a modern day fable of people who simply walked away from a society that had taken so much from them. They then created their own by stepping back to a more primitive time in an effort to protect their children's innocence. Much like how the Puritans came to America. It was a flawed plan, but done for laudable reasons. But it's also an examination of what happens when we do this. To quote my husband "humans do be humans." They lied to their children about the the evil "other" the forest ("out there") to keep them from finding out about the outside world. There was still death, temptation to cheat, mental illness, and murder. But love came too. And that made the movie for us. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Ayden M Im starting to think that M Night just hates disabled people. As a person who is both mentally and physically disabled, its very hard for me to see him continually make movies featuring disabled people as 'the villain'. I watched this movie as a kid and remember liking it, so I decided to rewatch as an adult and see what I thought. And ultimately, it just wasn't very enjoyable. There were a decent amount of plot holes, it was boring, and once again, like all M Night movies, the villains motive is 'mental illness'. The cast had some A List actors and none of them performed with the same grandeur of their other movies. The dialog felt flat and emotionless, the vocabulary was inconsistent, like the director couldnt decide whether or not to use contractions, so they just switched between using them and not using them. As well as the occasional sprinkle of modern words amongst the old fashion. It just felt odd and half baked, like an uncanny mismatch between periods of time that felt unintentional. All in all, this movie felt uninspired, boring, and bankrupt of intent. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
