Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine The filmmakers notably doodle in the margins from the start, slightly reorienting our perspective on the familiar tropes of both the teen and apocalyptic genres, making them feel almost new again. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 25, 2016 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts I thought it was all right for what it was, I'm not a huge fan of this type of film. I'm not really a huge fan of like teen films either. Rated: 5/10 Apr 29, 2021 Full Review Noah Berlatsky Splice Today There's a lot of potential, but most of it's wasted. Sep 18, 2019 Full Review Zena Dixon Real Queen of Horror Viral is an entertaining, infection horror film with awesome cinematography and a pretty cool story line. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...it is, in the end, not difficult to see why the prolific Blumhouse Productions decided to keep this one out of theaters. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 10, 2017 Full Review Pablo O. Scholz Clarín A film that offers the viewer what he paid for his entry. Very entertaining and scary. Chris P A zombie-like film with an alien undertone. Unfortunately it didn't do anything new, just rehashed tropes from both genres. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review John C 'Viral' is a 2016 horror-thriller that, despite not technically being a zombie film, adheres closely to the genre’s familiar tropes. Instead of the undead we have the more ('28 Days Later' style) 'infected' who can run and chase down our helpless human teens. This time it's a worm-like parasitic outbreak which can take over the host and make them basically behave like a zombie. The story follows two sisters trying to survive in their small suburban town which is slowly succumbing to the infection. The movie ticks off all the standard elements: quarantine zones, escalating paranoia, infected friends and neighbours and, finally, the gradual breakdown of society. The biggest drawback, however, is that 'Viral' takes its time getting going when it comes to the action. The first two-thirds are light on tension, with sparse sightings of the infected. This keeps the horror at bay but also slows down the pacing. Instead of ramping up the dread, it feels like the movie is treading water, making it hard to stay invested in the film (yes, I wanted to check my social media on my phone many a time during the first hour!). The final act does pick things up, bringing in more action, confrontation and a few decent enough scenes of horror. But. by then, it feels like a case of too little, too late. Although 'Viral' does have its moments and is reasonably well-shot, the slow build-up dampens the impact of what could have been a more gripping story. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Miss E Decent premise and neat idea for a zombiesque movie that almost mimics The Last of Us. The ending left a lot of questions including some parts of the movie itself. A "too easy" easy horror story with a good execution and a fun ride. If there's no part 2 it will be disappointing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review Tina K I liked it! It has funny high school humor and antics. It has satisfyingly "eeeewwww", "gotcha!", tension-filled, suspenseful, moments & scenes. It also has a nice mix of likeable and unlikeable characters. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/02/23 Full Review Michelle L Story isn't really original. It would have been a really good horror but the acting wasn't as great as it should be. Got boring towards the end, and unfortunately the final moments are somewhat corny. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
