Abandoned as a child, Jack (Dacre Montgomery, STRANGER THINGS) travels to remote New Zealand for the funeral of his estranged mother, Elizabeth. There, he meets her widow, Jill (Vicky Krieps, PHANTOM THREAD, CORSAGE), and over the nights that follow, Elizabeth's spirit begins to possess them in turn. What starts as a search for closure soon unearths deeper wounds. Bound by grief and haunted by what remains, Jack and Jill must break free from Elizabeth's grasp before she pushes them to the edge. Set against the deeply atmospheric backdrop of New Zealand's South Island, WENT UP THE HILL is an intimate, modern ghost story from Samuel Van Grinsven that explores the legacy of loss and the struggle to let go.

Steve Pond TheWrap Went Up the Hill is passionate and dark but also stubbornly elusive and illusive; it may get its title from a plainspoken nursery rhyme, but this is a movie that takes place in the shadows, both visually and narratively. Sep 11, 2024 Full Review Drew Gregory Autostraddle There are moments in this film that are genuinely terrifying — the story oscillating between quiet drama and horror. Sep 7, 2024 Full Review Caryn James The Hollywood Reporter Went Up a Hill is, after all, a ghost story, but one shaped in a fresh and artful way by a director who, in his second film, already has the control of a master. Sep 6, 2024 Full Review Frank J. Avella The Contending Went Up The Hill is supernatural weirdness personified and never really allows for a satisfying conclusion, but the two leads keep us enthralled throughout. Rated: B Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Carmen Paddock The Skinny Montgomery and Krieps, delivering a two-hander for most of the runtime, are excellently matched and find understated ways of conveying both their own characters’ disquiet and the other personality that invades.
