Melissa M @Lisey 6d One of the funniest underrated movies of all time. John Throughout the film he wears the craziest disguises. Each one more funnier than the next. John Candy is also good at physical comedy. He doesn't get enough credit for that. Paul flattery is the director. John Candy is the executive producer. Fun film fact. His 1st choice for the lead role of Elliott Draisen was John larroquette his friend. they both appeared in the movie stripes together. John larroquette wasn't available. because he was working on the show night court at the time. John Hughes Candy's friend recommended Jeffrey Jones for the role instead. Interesting movie fact John Candy wasn't happy with tristar's marketing campaign. Candy had prepared his own ad plan. Unfortunately the studio rejected it. He apparently had paid to rent his own billboards. Another interesting fact the film was pulled out of theaters after only a few weeks. Unknown fact there was an uncredited cameo by Jim Belushi as the man on the bus. See more Matthew D @OceanSage Jan 13 John Candy is perfectly cast as a bumbling private eye. Director Paul Flaherty’s mystery-comedy Who’s Harry Crumb (1989) is an underrated John Candy comedy film. Flaherty delivers sight gags, witty wordplay, physical slapstick, colorful characters, complex criminal narrative, and a heartfelt hero in John Candy’s doofus detective Harry Crumb. Writers Peter Wortmann and Robert Conte really carefully craft an absurdist crime mystery with tons of clues. I think Who’s Harry Crumb? is actually a rather underrated comedy movie. John Candy is hysterical and lovable as the idiot private detective Harry Crumb. He bumbles and guesses his way to victory all while willing to get hurt doing ridiculous and embarrassing slapstick. Candy’s dry delivery is especially funny as he makes Harry sound even stupider than you’d think possible. Candy normally goes for bigger delivery, so it’s amusing to see him tone it down for the character to come across as even dumber than the other idiots herein. Candy is the best thing in this and is good but everything else at best is just...ehh. The plot itself is kind of a clever setup for some fun but the way it's done is kind of sloppy, hard to follow the particulars, and the laughs only work say half the time at best. Most of the slapstick lands flat honestly and a lot of gags are on the dumb side. I can't tell if it's because it's edited poorly or just dumb. Maybe a bit of both I'm not sure. No one else is that memorable in this but it does it's job enough at giving a laugh every now and than for such a short runtime and none of it is particulary terrible just harmless. It's hard to say this is required viewing even for hardcore John candy fans. Most could skip this. See more Read all reviews
