James B Good Aussie flick, reveals itself slowly. As solid and plausible a story as you can ask for from a film, it all just seems an unfortunate but possible situation that someone could find themselves in. Yet another gem out of a country that churns them out with astounding consistency. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Mark H Idiotic waste of time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/22 Full Review s l Kept me guessing until the end. Well worth watching. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Tells it's story well enough, accompanied with some decent acting and ominous toned drama. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I should have listened to the other reviewers. What a waste of time. Save yourself the time and just read the plot on Wikipedia. Only thing that somewhat saved it was Edgerton's performance but it's not worth the time even for that. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review ronald h A simple plot and a simple moral: If you behave like an idiot, you will eventually pay for it. The idiots in question are two thirty-something Australian couples vacationing in Cambodia. They get drunk, lie on the beach, pop pills, and party every night. One of the females, Alice (Felicity Price) is pregnant, but she seems to think its OK to drink and take drugs. Her husband Dave (Joel Edgerton) doesn't do much to control her. Only three of them return to their native Sydney. The fourth, Jeremy (Antony Starr), the husband of Felicity's sister Steph (Teresa Palmer) is missing. Wasted as they all were, nobody has a clear memory of what happened to him. After some searching, Dave and Felicity come home to their two young children in Sydney. Steph stays in Cambodia, but she eventually returns to Sydney when no leads are found to explain Jeremy's disappearance. Meanwhile, Australian federal cops are investigating. The director gives us various short flashbacks to drop little clues that something very wrong went down in Cambodia, but we don't get the reveal until near the end. And it's not pretty. As an inveterate yuppie hater (Yes, I know yuppie is an outdated term, but nothing satisfactory has yet replaced it), I was prepared to dislike all four of the characters, and the story did nothing to change my attitude. But Joel Edgerton's strong performance held my interest. It's apparent that he knows what really happened, but he's withholding information for reasons unknown until the final act. No spoilers, but when we learn the truth, his reluctance is understandable. So one yuppie out of the four got a partial pass from this critic. The film is efficiently structured. The dialogue is natural and realistic. The flashbacks have a cumulative effect as puzzle pieces drop into place. Worth a watch if you like mysteries. I wonder what they call yuppies in Australia? Max Nelson Film Comment Magazine It's too easily satisfying, too traditionally well-made to be an honest portrait of dissatisfaction. Nov 4, 2013 Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times An Australian mystery-thriller dominated by Joel Edgerton's fearless performance as a compromised married man. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 20, 2013 Full Review Michael Sragow Orange County Register Joel Edgerton gives one of the year's strongest performances. Rated: 2.8/5 Nov 19, 2019 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com The performances of Edgerton and Price are compelling and wisely calibrated to carry the film through a potentially soggy narrative slump, likewise elevating the material beyond the trappings of a standard mystery thriller. Aug 20, 2019 Full Review Amie Simon Three Imaginary Girls ... a solid thriller with great acting and direction - which is a pretty good way to spend a few hours of your weekend.
