Audience Member Based on a true story what could have been a very sentimental and afternoon school film for teenagers is a rather moving and realistic story of women in prison and a realistic effort to help them improve the quality of their lives by training dogs to help disabled people. Ellen Burstyn gives a great performance of a cynical and clinically depressed women serving time for a violent crime and the life changing event that turns her into a better person. Not a Christmas or holiday movie since many of the prison scenes are R rated. A realistic and believable story of redemption without preaching or Disney happy endings. Great performances by Burstyn and Laura Dern. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Frances H Within These Walls is one of the type of film whose inspiring story could have ended up as an over-the-top melodramatic soap opera in less restrained hands, but the skillful direction of Mike Robe and the wonderful performances of Laura Dern and the always excellent Ellen Burstyn made this true story a touching and deeply moving experience without the crying towel suds. As an animal lover, I've always believed that loving an animal of any kind makes us more human and humane, bringing out the best in us all, and here is a story that proves this idea. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/27/13 Full Review Audience Member Touching Story about inmates who train service dogs. Brought a lot of tears, these dogs who rehabilitated the Prisoners; Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member It's not shot beautifully, and it's narrated in a way that ensures to shake your emotions. However, I'm a sucker for such story. The hardships of prisoners, no matter how oversensational they are, coupled with the gleamy vivacity of dogs, made me cried and smiled.
