After many years of supporting her writer husband, Bill (Van Johnson), Bertie Austin (Janet Leigh) leaves her career when he finally sells a successful novel. With their daughter, the couple moves from New York City to suburban Connecticut, where Bill concentrates on transforming his novel into a play with the help of agent Lucinda Ford (Martha Hyer). Bored and increasingly jealous, Bertie begins flirting with Gar Aldrich (Jeremy Slate), the actor who will take the lead in her husband's play.
