If a character or characters fail(s) to seize the opportunity to sufficiently kill the antagonist(s) when they have ample time and position to do so, then as far as I’m concerned if they get captured, tortured, raped, killed, etc. after that, it’s squarely on them and their dumb decisions. Yes… this is one of those movies. As popular and highly-regarded as Wolf Creek is in the slasher genre, it sure is annoying in this regard. Inspired by real-life Australian backpacker murders, this film takes the well-worn "lost travelers in the wilderness" trope and strips it of all Hollywood polish, leaving behind something visceral, unsettling, and disturbingly plausible. The story follows three backpackers stranded in the Australian outback, only to encounter Mick Taylor, a seemingly friendly bushman who quickly transforms into a sadistic predator. The film’s slow-burn first half builds an eerie sense of isolation, making the eventual descent into brutal, unflinching violence all the more gut-wrenching. While it’s effective in its raw, documentary-like horror, the film plays things too straight at times, making it deeply disturbing but not always entertaining. Mick Taylor, played brilliantly by John Jarratt, is chillingly understated in this first outing, a villain who feels all too real. But for all its atmospheric dread, Wolf Creek sometimes lingers too much on suffering for suffering’s sake, making it more of a psychological endurance test than a thrilling horror experience. ✔️ Verdict: A deeply unsettling and well-crafted horror, but its ultra-realistic tone makes it a tough watch.
