      Critics Consensus

Though Wolf Creek is effectively horrific, it is still tasteless exploitation.

BigD J If you've seen one backwoods kidnapping torture film, you've seen em all. First 2/3 of the film was pretty slow and boring. One of the victims is beyond annoying with her incessant whining and creating dead weight for her friend trying to help her. That said, when it was go time, kill scenes were definitely brutal and calculated. I'd say it's worth a watch, if you're into that kind of stuff. But, a bit overrated from the recommendations of my horror buff peers. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Kyle J Total waste of time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Alec B One can admire the slow burn of the early parts of the movie while also finding the cruel and nihilistic second half a little boring. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review Justin T This is not the best film by a long shot. It is totally eclipsed by Hostel (2005), which does the same thing but so much better even if it isn't a ‘good' film in itself - it just did the concept better. This tried too hard to be like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) but just didn't manage to do anything original at all and not even particularly scare anyone. Going down the route of aliens would have been far more interesting as that was the only exciting bit. There is gore and it is strong but the film is just too slow to get anything done to be worth watching. The scenery was pretty and the acting good though. Overall a very tepid experience. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Patrick C I hated watching it but it was very scary and brutal with likeable protagonists and a memorable bad guy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review Jeffrey P Could lop off the first 20 minutes and nothing would be missed, it may actually improve the viewing. Even the next 20 minutes, not much happens. I don't know what the list that I saw this on saw in this, when things finally did pick up it was mostly in the dark with limited visibility. Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly An unusually crisp and boldly shot Texas Chainsaw Massacre knockoff. Rated: B- Jan 4, 2006 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews What Wolf Creek offers is a competently made horror excursion with an unfortunate reliance upon clichés balanced off by some legitimate shocks. Rated: 3/4 Jan 3, 2006 Full Review Empire Magazine Rated: 4/5 Dec 31, 2005 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh The overall grit and intensity of the picture make it more engaging than similar fare, though still can't escape the subgenre's limitations. Rated: 3/5 Sep 24, 2023 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault Stylishly crafted but utterly empty, with a reputation for shock-horror it doesn’t really earn. Rated: D Sep 20, 2022 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Despite its looseness with the truth, Wolf Creek’s commitment to authenticity is very impressive.
