Critics Consensus

X-Men: The Last Stand provides plenty of mutant action for fans of the franchise, even if it does so at the expense of its predecessors' deeper character moments.

David Ansen Newsweek Sillier than the Singer versions, Ratner's movie is also -- for this less-than-reverent X-Men fan -- more satisfying. Jul 7, 2010 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal X-Men: The Last Stand has shifted the shape of the franchise from pretty good, if uninspired, to terrifically entertaining. Jun 22, 2006 Full Review Andrew Sarris Observer [I] found myself strangely moved by the sense of relationships, friendly and unfriendly, coming to an end in a dull return to normality in the world of humans and mutants. Jun 7, 2006 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) There are moments of genuine inspiration here, but they don’t add up all the way. Jul 22, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review At several points during The Last Stand, I wondered how many plots and subplots one film could handle, and ultimately, they all proved to be too much for one 104-minute movie. Rick C Rewatching the X-Men movies as an adult has helped me realize how difficult it is to write truly powerful characters. Some of the mutants like Jean Grey/Phoenix, Magneto, and Storm have no apparent limits to their capabilities except when limits are necessary for the narrative. As with X2, this third installment in the franchise has several moments where I asked myself why any given character didn't simply do this or that to solve the problem they faced. The finale is a prime example of this. Why did Magneto bring Phoenix to infiltrate Alcatraz but then proceed to not utilize her at all? She did nothing but stand there until he lost his power. When Magneto realized he couldn't manipulate the soldiers' plastic weapons, why didn't he simply extract some metal from the bridge he brought over, forge the metal into bullets, and take out all the soldiers? Why didn't Storm strike all of her opponents down with precise bolts of lightening? I've seen these characters perform such feats before, so why not now? Characters that are too strong result in a weak story. I don't think the X-Men movies are bad for what they are, I think the source material is fundamentally flawed. I also understand now why 20th Century Fox started producing spin-offs and prequels after this; The Last Stand created a dead-end for the franchise by killing off or otherwise nullifying most of the central characters. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Tommy D This movie is terrible... terrible...terrible Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Samuel W The third and final installment of the original X-Men trilogy shines as it resolves the main threads of Xavier and Magneto’s story alongside Jean Grey’s final act with the X-Men and the Brotherhood. With good characters, and cool action scenes, and excellent acting that was a step-up from the previous two movies, it made for a very enjoyable experience, yet a very predictable one. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Jens B Lots of action (with mostly real explosions 🥹), a great score, and pretty well-aged effects – and only 100 minutes long. Basically everything I wish for in current comic book adaptations. Unfortunately, the script doesn't work. The characters don't act intrinsically but are placed by the writers where needed, even if it contradicts their own motivations. The best example: Jean Grey. But Rogue, Wolverine, etc., also belong on this list. Emotional scenes (e.g., Angel) and interesting themes ("curing" mutants) don't get the breathing room they deserve. Even the finale feels rushed. By next week, I'll probably have forgotten 60% of the movie already. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Obi-wan K Alright movie not better then the first 2 movies Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Ryan H X3 ups the mutant mayhem & action! But unfortunately, the story suffers this time around. There is a better film in here, but a choice needed to be made: either “The Cure” storyline or “The Dark Phoenix;” it was a mistake to try for both. It’s not terrible film…just a disappointment following the brilliance of X1 & X2. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
