Critics Consensus

Yogi Bear's 3D effects and all-star voice cast are cold comfort for its aggressively mediocre screenplay.

Nell Minow Movie Mom Rated: C Apr 21, 2012 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) The new Yogi Bear is survivable. That's as far as I'll go. Rated: 2/5 Feb 11, 2011 Full Review John Walsh Independent (UK) There are some watchable 3D sequences in a boat on the rapids and a makeshift airplane, but it's pretty grim for anyone over six. Rated: 1/5 Feb 11, 2011 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Lazily plotted and tiredly predictable, the film reminds me of one of that other Yogi's most famous phrases: "It's deja vu all over again." Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2020 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com How is it, by the way, that a park has actual talking bears and nobody seems to care? How is this park losing money, anyway? Rated: 1.5/4.0 Sep 27, 2020 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a patience-testing, headache-inducing disaster with little to offer older viewers. KEVIN K my dad forced me to watch this and i hated every second of it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Rebecca R As someone new to the series, I found the film to be a decent children’s movie that embraces its target audience with silly humor for kids and a few moments for adults. It doesn’t aim to be a blockbuster, instead focusing on lighthearted fun, though the CGI falters in scenes like the boat sequence, and the caterpillar scene is especially unpleasant. The movie drags at times when characters are moping or stressed, and the plot is weak, with a lackluster villain and an unconvincing love story. Still, there are standout moments, like the visually memorable “space donut” scene and clever jokes, such as the music cutting off during a lock-picking or the chaos caused by a live microphone. Rachel’s fourth-wall break at the end is confusing but suits the whimsical tone, encouraging viewers to go with the flow. Overall, while the film may not leave a lasting impact, it has enough fun and quotable moments to make it an enjoyable, if shallow, watch for kids that adults can tolerate. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Anna P This is genuinely one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. The plot is incredible. Great visuals. Voice acting and actors are amazing. This is a masterpiece and we should be grateful to have been blessed with it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Joshua H Yogi may be smarter than the average bear, but this movie is very much not, go camping instead of watching this thin and basic movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/24 Full Review Allison B Time for hunting season Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review Lou T Attempting to reinvigorate this classic character for a modern audience, Yogi Bear sets out to create a fun kids movie. While the plot is basic, you will constantly be entertained and it is thoroughly enjoyable to watch . The charm of this comes heavily from the wonderful cast, with Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanagh) and Yogi (Dan Aykroyd) stand out as a delightful pairing. Unfortunately, the green screening is abysmal at points and fully ruins one of the biggest sequences in the film, going from engaging to laughable. While other films have done similar stories better, Yogi Bear has quite a bit of charisma and it's hard to be disappointed at a film that stays so true to the classic characters.
