Dean Youngblood was raised by his father, Blane, on a diet of toughness and hockey. When Dean is invited to join the Hamilton Mustangs, he travels to Canada from Detroit where his skill commands respect and his arrogance earns him fast enemies. Coach Chadwick, resentful of being saddled with such a toxic player, keeps Dean benched game after game. Dean's frustration builds, culminating in a violent outburst involving rival goon Carl Racki that costs the Mustangs a significant win. As Team Captain Sutton takes him under his wing, Dean begins to buck Blane's teachings and his growing maturity spurs a relationship with Jessie -- Coach Chadwick's daughter -- who gives Dean a run for his money on and off the ice. His newfound resolve draws the ire of Racki, who provokes Dean during a game by attacking and seriously injuring Sutton. As the final game of the Eastern Conference Finals approaches, so does his showdown with Racki and Dean's choice as to what kind of man he wants to be.

For a game of fire and ice, this new Youngblood feels decidedly lukewarm. Go to Full Review

James, who made an impression as an aspiring Canadian rapper in 2024’s “Boxcutter,” is a model of naturalism here; he is most impressive when he shrouds himself in understatement. Go to Full Review

The narrative seems too focused on the trials of the protagonist and not the triumphs. Go to Full Review

As a sports film, the plot follows a familiar trajectory, but it is the added shading that allows this movie to work better than it would otherwise. Go to Full Review

Youngblood gives viewers a chance to see an unvarnished, imperfect Black character who still demands that you see his humanity. Go to Full Review

On the ice, the sports drama of Youngblood is immersive. Off the ice, it’s restrained and anemic. Go to Full Review

Sam B 3d Listen to be taught, enjoyed See more Bert 4d I liked it. It had a redeeming message of family, racial struggles, and the pros & cons of sports. There was too much emphasis on Deans anger and violence responses. See more Shawn H 5d It was kind of predictable but it was heartfelt and shows how dedication pays off. See more Estela B 6d I was expecting this movie to be one of those feel good kind of movie, but it is not. The over the top anger made it so unrealistic. No excitement in the games and overall plot. The love scenes were inappropriate for the character, which is a teenager. The coachs speech in the locker room felt flat. You can easily predict the whats coming next in the movie. I wouldnt waste my time. See more jesse v 6d Not sure why this movie is categorized as Action/Adventure, it's a soft sports drama. The main character is so immaturely egotistical in trying to be a winner and keeps getting into subtle racist fights with all the white characters All seen by a disappointed father and cushioned by a love interest for behavioral comfort (the only female in the whole movie btw). There is also a fallback friend that makes the main character focus more. Also we never see the commentators for some reason nor the backstory of the coach. See more phil Mar 8 The character stories were good. Cinematography was mostly okay, maybe called attention to itself too much. Too many closeups at times, was a little distracting. On ice shooting wasn’t great and as a hockey fan kind of annoying. Refreshing to see a low budget movie on the big screen and not dumped onto a streamer, just wish there had been a slightly bigger budget for the on ice shooting and action. Overall a satisfying story with a cool, slightly fairy tale ending. See more Read all reviews
