As beautifully animated as it is emotionally satisfying, Your Name adds another outstanding chapter to writer-director Makoto Shinkai's filmography.

Kristen Yoonsoo Kim Brooklyn Magazine Beautifully animated (we're talking Studio Ghibli standards here), Your Name captures that sensation of waking up from a dream you wish lasted longer, or misplacing a name that's still warm on your tongue, but has just departed. May 1, 2017 Full Review Keith Phipps Uproxx By the time Your Name reaches its moving finale, the Next Big Thing tag doesn't seem quite enough for Shinkai. He's arrived already. Apr 11, 2017 Full Review Emily St. James Vox By the time Your Name reaches its final half-hour or so, the film has moved so far beyond its initial premise that if you think back to the beginning, you'll be astonished by how far it's come. Rated: 5/5 Apr 10, 2017 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film An emotionally intense, unforgettable viewing experience, filled with “coming-of-age” fun and spiritual longings. Rated: 5/5 Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Mat Brunet AniMat's Review (YouTube) As much as it is very well done, I don’t think it’s worth putting it up on such a high pedestal on par with the works of Hayao Miyazaki. Your Name is good, but for me, it's not worthy of breaking Spirited Away’s record good. Rated: 8/10 Mar 8, 2024 Full Review Patricia Karounos Refinery29 The power of connection is at its most moving in Your Name. Oct 23, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Avery C Gut punch after gut punch, I cried probably 4 times watching this. Everytime you think you made it out the woods it continues to show you why it’s critically acclaimed. Absolute emotional roller coaster, would recommend to anyone I meet Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Nashville I An adventure that transcends anime, genres, and explanation. Truly a masterpiece of visual magic, perfect chemistry among actors, and music that's honestly so damn beautiful and fun, at just the right beats. Immediately upbeat and so naturally nice and fun from the get-go, the twist and emotional gut punch in Your Name is indescribably life changing. A perfect movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Cuori R Your Name. is a good film with out-of-this-world visuals, a beautiful original soundtrack, and a creative premise that stands out among many animated films. I truly enjoyed it and often find myself listening to the soundtrack. That said, while. While I enjoyed it, it didn't 'change' me like it seemed to change so many others. It didn’t challenge my perspective or leave me with a lasting moral lesson. To me, it’s a memorable and well-executed movie, but not one that reached the emotional or philosophical heights of other anime films. It’s good, even great in some areas. Again, I like the film, I just don’t believe it lives up to the "greatest anime film of all time" status some fans give it. 7.5/10 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/27/25 Full Review Madison M Underrated anime, no one talks about this anime enough, especially the Sub version. The Japanese did amazing job bringing the characters to life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/25 Full Review Martin A Absolute masterpiece of a movie. Has some evident flaws but still is a must see movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/25 Full Review Benjamin H With breathtaking animation and visuals that leaps off the screen and an absorbing story, Your Name is an evocative and emotionally powerful film that provides fully fledged characters and a remarkably catchy score.
