Critics Consensus

Despite the best efforts of its two talented female leads, You're Not You is not a consistently satisfying adaptation of its source material.

Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times It's unfortunate, then, that this earnest, hard-working adaptation of the 2006 Michelle Wildgen novel... isn't a more satisfying dramatic portrayal of the disease and its impact. Nov 20, 2018 Full Review Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter Swank delivers an emotionally and physically committed performance that significantly elevates the sometimes mawkish material. Nov 20, 2018 Full Review Marc Snetiker Entertainment Weekly Despite offering a well-timed look at the realities of the disease, the movie clunkily eschews cinematic creativity for emotional manipulation. Inquisitive ice-bucket challengers, consider yourselves warned. Rated: C Oct 11, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Better than expected but not quite believable in every regard, You're Not You is at least an honest attempt to grapple with a portrait of the disease. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 6, 2019 Full Review Morgan Rojas Cinemacy Based off Michelle Wildgen's book of the same name, You're Not You is both comical and touching, heartfelt and quirky, and an excellent performance piece about the power of friendship. Nov 8, 2018 Full Review Carolina Ruiz En Filme This is not a new premise, but it manages to create empathy in the audience through a great story about vulnerability and extreme dependence. Resistakill These kind of movies always intrigue me. I know having ADHD and autism are no where near the same as having ALS. Hilary Swank did a fantastic job at showing how ALS effects a person, gradually removing every aspect we take advantage of constantly. This is a beautiful movie, well done by everyone involved. Try to not be distracted while watching because the story has many intricacies you may miss if you aren't focused. Thank you to all for sharing this work of art! The only real gripe I have with the movie is that it could have been a half hour to an hour longer and I'd have enjoyed it more. The scenes were cut up, with so many scenes only having maybe 10 seconds, then moving on. Those scenes could have easily been two or three times as long, 30 seconds or longer, and had just as much affect, if not more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Eric A Hilary Swank is an outstanding actress. She was outstanding in this movie. Very sad movie with ups and down. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/07/23 Full Review Jackson H Liked the movie, especially Hilary Swank.Kind of unstable but watchable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/14/23 Full Review Roy V My mother died 2 years ago in October. Movies are invitations to experiences felt or never felt before. I've had the privilege of taking care of my aging parents for the past 12 years. Mom was both mobile and Lucid up until the day she died. I'm still taking care of Dad who is also both mobile and lucid. Hillary and Emmy wash away the critique and have allowed me the joy that I presently experience As a caretaker! That's what talented thespians do. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/06/23 Full Review A Michelle H I don't know who reviews for rotten tomatoes, but they lack seeing great acting, story line and realism. Good movie about change, love and more. My boyfriend liked it too! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member One of few movies that had ever brought me to tears--the end was no surprise as ALS ultimately has one outcome, but the bond formed and genuine caring between the two women throughout the movie, Bec's transition from a young carefree "mess" to eventually be the person Kate trusts the most, building to such an emotionally riveting sending, and everything in between made this movie something special... I don't understand the critics' aggregate score, but it truly is an exceptional work! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
