John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter A good-natured ride at first, its limited scope grows more apparent as it goes; still, a feel-good approach is unlikely to hurt... Aug 20, 2019 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety Though it's far from the last word on ZZ Top, "That Little Ol' Band From Texas" fills in the nuts and bolts, giving you enough of a glimpse of how it all happened to make it seem like a down-home rock 'n' roll mirage come true. Aug 17, 2019 Full Review Benjamin H. Smith Decider Like the band itself, ZZ Top: That Little Ol' Band From Texas is satisfying in its simple presentation. Mar 10, 2020 Full Review Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat Spirituality & Practice Story of the blues-inspired rock band who describe themselves as an oddball group. Rated: 3/5 Aug 15, 2019 Full Review Julian Roman MovieWeb A must see for ZZ Top fans, and anyone who appreciates blues-driven rock and roll. We get real insights into the band's dynamics. The soundtrack is also packed with blues classics and their greatest hits. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 15, 2019 Full Review Lorry Kikta Film Threat I greatly enjoyed ZZ Top: That Little Ol' Band From Texas, because I found out the reality behind a band that has always had a bit of a mythos behind them, much like the great state of Texas itself. Jamie M Love this documentary Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review ma'ark t I would have liked a bit more depth into ZZ Top but the interviews with the band are gold. Really enjoyable for someone like me who did not know anything about ZZ Top. However, hardcore fans will also enjoy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member You can have your Clapton, Zeppelin, Hendrix, the Stones, whoever you care to mention. Though these and many others have made great music, it's just not the same. No one has ever melded blues and rock better than ZZ Top. It's not even close. It's deep, it's down, it's dirty, it's pure, and it has great humor and heart. I mean, they grew up to the west of the Mississippi Delta in Texas, and that s*** seeped into their blood. They might be last on the list alphabetically, but ZZ Top will always be first as far as showcasing that hallowed blend so many have been described as possessing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review susan j Not bad. Not bad at all. A little bland. A bit opaque. Enjoyed it. It's enjoyable -- entertaining. But an inch deep. Kind of like the band, in a way. They've never really opened up in terms of who they actually are. This film does very little to give you any real understanding of them. It's sort of like a pretty thorough band bio made into a film, with lots of good B-roll from the early days before they were ZZ Top + a handful of amusing interviews and soundbytes . The 3 guys seems to like each other well enough, after all these years but, again, the stuff they share is of a pleasantly superficial nature. I don't feel watching it was time wasted, but I'm also only slightly more aware of what makes this band somewhat significant than before I watched it. Again---not bad at all. Not hagiography. Not white-washed. Not dishonest. Fun enough -- just kinda shallow. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty good overview of the band up to the Eliminator/Afterburner era. Nothing about the albums or tours since then, really, just that they kept recording and touring. The 60's-70's stuff is easily the best. Wish they'd talked more about "Deguello", as it's my favorite album of theirs. Seemed to be pretty fair and even-handed, with Beard's struggles along with their success. 3.2 stars Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member A behind-the-scenes and behind-the-beard deep dive into Top, but even that still only gets you skin deep. Nevertheless: a-ha-ha-ha-ha. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
