Critics Consensus

Handsomely shot and thoroughly grim, American Primeval drives home its point about a nation's bone-deep savagery to persuasive, and sometimes deadening, effect.

Carol Midgley Times (UK) This is, to be clear, high-quality misery and an educational antidote to sentimental myth. Whether you want to put yourself through it is a matter for you. Rated: 3/5 Jan 27, 2025 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Berg’s series pushes the limits of violence and cruelty, but his rugged, in-your-face style succeeds in keeping you on edge and spares no one. Rated: 3/4 Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The show is intent on being overwhelming -- it can be as crude a weapon as the shovel wielded by settlement founder Jim Bridger (Shea Whigham). But its depiction of how fundamentalism and capitalism fuel each other can’t help but resonate. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 16, 2025 Full Review Siddhant Adlakha Mashable Despite its threads unraveling in haphazard ways, the series is never boring, and never wanting for a good performance. Feb 3, 2025 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene Certainly there are no characters to enchant us in the way Gus and Woodrow did on their cattle drive. Still, this series has some killer scenery and the action is brutal and merciless. Jan 26, 2025 Full Review Steve Murray ArtsATL American Primeval doesn’t bill itself as horror but as frontier drama. Don’t kid yourself. Created by Mark L. Smith, the oh-so-seriously macho writer of the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Revenant, Primeval is close to a long-form snuff film. Tom Q I thought this was a great series. Very gritty and I would guess accurate to how people in the west would have been. My wife and I try to slowly watch series like these, but this swept us up in the story and we got through it in two sittings. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review JOAN PAU R This was very evocative and stayed with me. The historical context of the clash for Utah between the Mormons, the native peoples, and the other colonists (supported ith remarkable inefficiency by the federal army), is offered with enough complexity, and the use of the landscape to convey the discomfort is superb. I particularly liked the female lead, playing runaway mother from the civilized East Sara, both dignified and a little stupid, and the human touch in the interactions between white settlers and native Americans, especially the two young ones. This may be a little romanticised, as it plays with the obvious tropes of the dirty western, and perhaps the Mormons were less uniformly vilanous than is here suggested, but the massacre of travelling colonists at the heart of the story did occur. (If you want something even more realistic and even darker try Killers of the Flower Moon). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Bo M A well-made series, I watched it with pleasure Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Karen J Decent show up until the last 2 episodes. Terrible ending. I wish I could get those 6 hours of my life back. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Ernest L I really enjoyed American Primeval which takes place during 1857 just before the civil war. An exciting story with lots of action about the Mormons, Native Americans and civilian population clashing against one another. In the midst of all that is going on we have a mother, with a bounty on her for murder, traveling with her young son. This is a limited series on playing on NetFlix. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Kate M Brutal but brilliant. Despite not being my usual taste in shows, American Primeval was a phenomenal watch. Great casting, writing and acting. It's not an easy watch, but my goodness, it's worth it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Read all reviews
