Critics Consensus

Handsomely shot and thoroughly grim, American Primeval drives home its point about a nation's bone-deep savagery to persuasive, and sometimes deadening, effect.

Clarisse Loughrey Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) Creates the idea that there’s something innately inhospitable about this entire land, depicted always as muddy and foul, despite the fact people like the Shoshone had thrived for centuries before all this deprivation, destruction, and forced migration. Apr 3, 2025 Full Review Graeme Blundell The Australian It’s a visually arresting piece of work, the colours muted and grim as the storyline, full of pain, fear and confusion. Feb 7, 2025 Full Review Carol Midgley The Times (UK) This is, to be clear, high-quality misery and an educational antidote to sentimental myth. Whether you want to put yourself through it is a matter for you. Rated: 3/5 Jan 27, 2025 Full Review Mini Anthikad-Chhibber The Hindu The Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857 and the vicious struggle for control in the Wild West come alive in exquisite frames and shocking violence May 16, 2025 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Grungy, gory, savage depiction of a ''Wanted' woman and her young son traveling through the the Utah Territory in the Old American West - circa 1857 - focusing on the Mormons and Native Shoshone, Southern Paiute and Ute tribes. Rated: 7/10 Mar 17, 2025 Full Review Marcelo Stiletano La Nación (Argentina) The argument that only extreme realist can reconstruct what happened at that time and place doesn't feel enough. The insistence on this theme makes the narrative, at times, an exhibitionist display of gratuitous cruelty. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Feb 16, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Jesse M Much, much better than I was expecting. Saw all episodes straight through. Rather brutal. My only issue was the distance covered by certain parties as they were going to and fro as I was not exactly clear about where certain locations were in relation to each other and the distance. But still, really enjoyed it. I liked Kitch's character and at first could not stand the female protagonist, but I ended up liking her a lot. The only bad thing is that it was a limited series. Oh well. It was a good story overall. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/17/25 Full Review Lovell T Brutal, fast-paced and controversial. Nothing can be more primeval than this slice of American history. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review Timothy L The limited series was excellent. I'm not a big fan of the genre but this series kept me engaged the entire way. It is well written and well cast. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Eswaran W As usual, follow the audience and not the critics! A great watch. Brilliant ensemble acting. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/25 Full Review Audience Member The first couple of episodes were fine, but then it devolved into multiple unbelievable scenes. You can only believe so much and chalk it up to "entertainment," but much of the terrible choices make no sense. Not a good show. Stopped watching during episode five. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/29/25 Full Review Ron G Fast-paced and brutal, not for the faint of heart. Stunning cinematography and first class acting.
