Based on Philipp Meyer's novel of the same name, "American Rust" explores the tattered American dream through the eyes of a police chief in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania. Chief Del Harris (Jeff Daniels) becomes compromised when the son of the woman he loves is accused of murder. Complications continue to arise as the investigation proceeds. Maura Tierney, David Alvarez, Bill Camp, Julia Mayorga, Alex Neustaedter and Mark Pellegrino also star.

It’s a gripping story that does a great job showing the struggles of a small-town community while keeping you hooked with its mystery and suspense. Jeff Daniels is excellent as Chief Del Harris — complex, tough, but also very human — and Maura Tierney brings so much heart to her role. The show looks great too, with the scenery really capturing the mix of beauty and hardship in the Rust Belt. What I liked most is that it’s not just about crime, but also about people, their choices, and how far they’ll go for the ones they love.
