It all leads up to what I have been re-watching the last Castlevania animated series to the first season of Nocturne to its recently released second season. I've held it up for so long that it was certainly worth it. An improvement on character dynamic, character chemistry, and emotion with each character arc. Just a heads up, there will be some spoilers here as much as I can minimize it while I will share spoilers that were featured from the last season as it's a continuation. Just in case, you have been warned.
The story continues off as Erzebet continues her conquest while teaming up with the Abbot, or Emmanuel, who actually is a devil forgemaster himself and built the machine that was below the church where it was used to bring back Drolta as a night creature. In the meantime, Alucard, voiced once again by James Callis, teams up with Richter and Annette as they learn more about the Egyptian goddess, Sekhmet, as her soul is divided by three parts. He blood, her heart, and her physical body. So they go searching about where they are while driving away any vampire who continues to hunt humans.
Meanwhile, Maria confronts her mother, Tera, who is now a vampire after taking Maria's place instead. Maria learns more about her father, which was revealed back in the first season and was consumed by the darkness once she'd confronted him in person. After that, Tera, her animal spirts, and Juste had to go their way to bring her back on the right back so she doesn't end up like her mother. I won't say much about Maria's confrontation with her father, but I will say it is dark as hell. There are also other kits of story like Edouard befriending the female captain of the National Guard turned night creature and reconsidering their actions working under Erzebet. There are also times when we see Olrox worrying about his lover, Mizrak, as well as confronting Erzebet's actions and this mysterious shadowy figure who I won't say much of.
As the story goes on, before they start, we do see the backstory of both Drolta, who is a devoted priestess of Sekhmet and became a vampire after dealing with an assault by other vampires outside of Egypt. We also see the backstory of Erzebet, as her original human form being the countess Elizabeth Bathory, tempted to become a vessel for Sekhmet. I love this detail, especially for how I find Erzebet to be more than how I'd viewed her as a generic villain back in the first season. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say if you've paid attention to their backstory, the final confrontation between Richter, Annette, Alucard, Maria, Misrak, and Juste against Erzebet, Drolta and their army was worth the build up.
Especially when we see Annette go into the spirit world to speak with her ancestors, including her mentor, Cecile, voiced by Sharon D. Clarke. Yeah, sorry that I didn't mention her during my review of the last season, but her appearance was short. Plus, with Alucard's experience with human politics, he convinces Robespierre at the National Convention. Yes, that Maximilien Francois Marie Isidore de Robespierre. There was even a brief appearance of Louis XVI in this. I won't reveal his fate. I'm just pointing it out. This is a historical fictional project, after all.
There is still some mystery that makes you wonder, like that shadowy figure that appeared a few times throughout the series. Olrox called it something, and I even looked up a couple of names that surround that character. That, I'll let y'all figure it out because it could be more than what it was shown in either a third season or in a future Castlevania spin-off series. I could admit that Olrox himself is just an on/off character as he did in the last season, especially in the final two episodes. Since he doesn't take either side yet, he does help on both sides. One side at the beginning and the other at the end. Still curious about his motive, to be honest. But I digress. At the least, he shared more about his time that revolves around his past involving the conquistadors. There is also the sense of where Tera would go after her last meeting with her daughter.
Other than that, it was an improvement in many levels, especially the chemistry between Richter and Annette. Like how Annette comforted and showed empathy towards Richter about the loss of his mother as he does so in return in the last season, Richter does the same. Confronting both her mother, mentor, ancestors, and even Ogun, Annette learns to grow stronger to travel across the river from one pantheon to another within the spirit world. Plenty of times you'd see these two flirt with each other that even Alucard knows it.
With that said, this was a near masterpiece of a series that it's worth checking out. An improvement of the first season. If there is news of a third season, I certainly would be down to watch it after what has transpired before they've sailed away after the final fight. The animation is still phenomenal. The designs of the characters and night creatures are still as gorgeous as some of the backgrounds. The voice cast has improved themselves. Sure, some dialogue makes ya scuffle, yet it doesn't bother me too much. It has been one helluva war that was worth fighting for humanity against someone who would bring in an eternal eclipse.
For that, this second season is going up there as one of the best anime/TV shows of 2025, and I am gonna give it nine Richter and Annette blushing from one another out of ten. 9/10.
