Alan Sepinwall Rolling Stone The aesthetic is simultaneously off-putting and endearing, as if this is obviously not what people should look like, but in a way that suggests how hard it is for them to navigate this strange and broken world in which we all find ourselves. Jun 18, 2025 Full Review Coleman Spilde Salon.com Creators Joe Bennett and Steve Hely are so adept at hooking viewers that it’s almost frightening. Apr 7, 2025 Full Review Roxana Hadadi New York Magazine/Vulture This animated world may revolve around a fantastical fungus, but it contains all of our real-world frustrations, as well as our questions, about what we can actually do to improve how normalized our miseries have become. Mar 31, 2025 Full Review Bethan Ackerley New Scientist Eventually, the messier elements of Common Side Effects do coalesce pretty much perfectly into a hopeful, humanistic show about making mistakes and how we go about healing. Apr 6, 2025 Full Review Isaiah Colbert io9.com Common Side Effects is abound with lush and vivid background art; surreal, kaleidoscopic, fluid animation; and shocking violence—all working in concert with its suspenseful narrative. Apr 3, 2025 Full Review Chris McCoy Memphis Flyer Don’t let the animation fool you into thinking this show isn’t a serious work of art. Mar 27, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Christopher R This is the freshest thing I've seen from adult swim or on TV, in freaking Years. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/02/25 Full Review Ryan H This show should be on your watch list with its subtle and hilarious humor while attacking Big Pharma. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Aaron M Wow what a nice surprise. I loved the storytelling, the pacing and all the characters. It's almost a perfect score for me. Didn't like the ending though. Would have loved if they had wrapped it up nicely in one season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/25 Full Review Ignacio S Ugly, but wonderful When I first saw the trailer for this series, it didn’t pass my filter — the art direction was borderline nauseating to me. I found it hideous. And no, I’m not saying it’s poorly made; you can clearly see the intention and craftsmanship behind it — it’s just not for me on that front. However, once only two or three episodes had been released, I started reading very positive reviews, so I forced myself to give it a chance — and it absolutely deserved it. Putting aside the visuals (which I still find awful), everything else is outstanding. The pacing is excellent, and the way they introduce new, interesting characters — each with compelling backgrounds and niche references — is something I appreciate far more than the average viewer. The story is classic in the sense that we’ve seen countless tales about big pharma, conflicts of interest, lies, and so on... but it adds originality through its small details, which gives it a soul of its own — something many other productions lack entirely. It’s definitely not for everyone. I don’t think it caters to all tastes — and I actually believe that works in its favor. But you have to enjoy this kind of strong, niche brew. I’d sum it up as the antithesis of a run-of-the-mill Netflix production — and that’s always a good thing.
