By turns emotionally devastating and icy, Expats is a challenging drama made riveting by an ace cast and creator Lulu Wang's deft direction.

Saloni Gajjar AV Club Expats has a keen understanding of womanhood, with the type of brutal authenticity that only comes from having women in front of and behind the camera. Helmed by The Farewell’s Lulu Wang, the all-female writers’ room doles out an affecting hit. Rated: A- Feb 15, 2024 Full Review Eryk Bagshaw The Age (Australia) Perhaps Expats is such uncomfortable viewing because the privilege is all too real. Audience Member It had potential but really lost the story lines. Ended up just being about adultery in another country. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Fran L This isn't what happens in Hong Kong. Maybe an expat might roll her husband up in a rug but not this. This is tone deaf in so many ways including how they barged in for shooting during covid to make it while everyone else was forced into three weeks of quarantine. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/01/24 Full Review Alice M I watched three episodes and then Amazon said it wasn’t available and I don’t think I’m going to watch any more. I really don’t think it’s good. I think it’s kind of bad, actually. There’s no emotional truth to what any of the characters do. There’s this devastating event at the centre of it all, and the characters’ actions don’t really make sense in connection with this event. The pilot episode infuriatingly circles around this event without just coming out and telling us what it involves, and let's say, it's an open question regarding what has happened to a person and the people who love this person aren't making any attempt in the opening episode to get to the bottom of this question?? It’s the kind of show that thinks being slow and having lots of stony faces and silences constitutes emotional depth. I like slow shows such as Rectify, but this is not it. And it should have been a film, or perhaps two films. The story of the Filipina workers (I didn't get to this episode), and then the story of the 'event'. But the story of the 'event' is not a series. There really isn’t the story or sufficiently interesting character dynamics to sustain it. The hooks at the end of the episodes are just weird and like not grounded in the drama. The pilot ep is really just set-up, and not very good set-up. Hong Kong is an interesting place, and there are moments between employers and employees that are interesting - it's hard to do this in a way that isn't really heavy-handed, and sometimes the show succeeds in making it feel kind of organic and real, so kudos in that respect. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/21/24 Full Review SETH J Nicole Kidman's plastic face is horribly distracting. It's really getting sad. Great use of the city but the story just draaaaaaaaaaags... Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review David A Amazing show. The atmosphere is extremely well done. You're brought into the show. This is what it feels like to be in Honk Kong. The sounds, the smells, the people, the streets. The characters are rich and well developed. The behavior is believable and acting is amazing. The score enhances everything and the plot is compelling. The attention to detail and filming makes so visceral what the characters are going through and experiencing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/09/24 Full Review Tom F My early assessment of this as a skippable soap opera about rich ladies proved wrong, and the series rewarded attentive viewing through the end. I was initially angry when I saw how long episode 5 was, but it ended up not just a solid piece of TV but did a lot to vindicate the entire series.
