By turns emotionally devastating and icy, Expats is a challenging drama made riveting by an ace cast and creator Lulu Wang's deft direction.

Saloni Gajjar AV Club Expats has a keen understanding of womanhood, with the type of brutal authenticity that only comes from having women in front of and behind the camera. Helmed by The Farewell’s Lulu Wang, the all-female writers’ room doles out an affecting hit. Rated: A- Feb 15, 2024 Full Review Eryk Bagshaw The Age (Australia) Perhaps Expats is such uncomfortable viewing because the privilege is all too real. Rated: 3/5 Feb 2, 2024 Full Review Clint Worthington RogerEbert.com As good as Kidman is ... “Expats” greatest surprises come with [Suraya] Blue’s acerbic, cynical turn as Hilary—a complicated, confrontational woman bristling against the familial expectations of Indian culture—and Yoo’s free-spirited, flighty Mercy. Jan 31, 2024 Full Review Miles Surrey The Ringer Amid these intertwining arcs, Expats delivers an authentic, multifaceted portrait of Hong Kong and the people who call it home—if only temporarily. Jul 23, 2024 Full Review Archi Sengupta LeisureByte.com This series is an interesting look at the lives of families with different, relatable problems. Carl P Brilliant. So many perspectives and elements of life are explored. The story is long enough to really bring to life the depth of the characters, and as a mini-series it ends as it should. The intentional camera work, music and production draw you in to the ebb and flow and tension of each moment. Nicole Kidman is one of the finest actors of her time and continues to go from strength to strength in recent productions. She stands with a fantastic cast of actors and actresses, each worth a most special mention, in a multi-lingual, multi-cultural tour de force. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/25 Full Review Robert C Interesting premise, but gets dull fast. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Roslyn A I have high hopes for any Nicole Kidman work. However, this was entirely miscast. No chemistry AT ALL for a supposed husband and wife. A husband whose parents are obviously Chinese speaking and yet in the morgue he can not speak one word of Chinese to the employee. At least Mercy CAN speak Korean to her Korean speaking mother. Ms. Wang if you had anything to do with the casting of this series, it is disappointing. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review B B Intellectual and arty. Beautiful cinematography. One the most beautiful show which i ever watched. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Audience Member It had potential but really lost the story lines. Ended up just being about adultery in another country. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Fran L This isn't what happens in Hong Kong. Maybe an expat might roll her husband up in a rug but not this. This is tone deaf in so many ways including how they barged in for shooting during covid to make it while everyone else was forced into three weeks of quarantine.
