What to Know

Critics Consensus

Adapting its satirical source material to imperfect but thrilling effect, Interior Chinatown is freewheeling entertainment with plenty to say about Asian-American stereotypes in media.

What starts out as a cheeky meta murder mystery instead becomes a high-concept experiment that is at once daring, tiresome and too ambitious for its own good. Go to Full Review

For the most part, this metafiction about a Chinese restaurant waiter... manages to satisfy both its conceptual framework that exists inside a cliched story and provide a sense of humanity to what is an otherworldly realm. Go to Full Review

If the show isn’t quite a scathing indictment of assimilation and the racist expectations therein, it at least makes its emphasis on the comedic murder mystery a fun, intriguing ride. Go to Full Review

Even when it’s treading ground you, as a viewer, have already trod, or when its ambitions aren’t quite ambitious enough, Interior Chinatown has a lot to say, and from voices we don’t hear enough. Go to Full Review

Interior Chinatown is certainly ambitious, with a layered meta concept that demands attention. Go to Full Review

Interior Chinatown is one of the most refreshing takes on the often played-out detective genre that I've seen in years. Go to Full Review

Adrian B Dec 1 First few episode I was pretty hooked. Not the first show that goes on this premise, sure, but they way they go about it is pretty cool. I liked our every challange Willis had he treated like a puzzle, as a fan of escape rooms, felt similar. Some of the plot twists were a bit more predictible than others (like Lana and his brother), but still overall engaging. I do however have one bit that I think it was a really poor choice and could've changed the whole finale out of a mediocre 5 to a 10 and that is the final picture on the desk.. I was fine with how Lana though about escaping the 'matrix', combining with the game and the roof reference, final boss needed two players etc.. BUT... showing the picture of Johnny and Willies when Willis was young implies he never escaped and just raises 10x more questions... INSTEAD... showing a picture of both of them adults, doesn't matter the setting, might implied they manage to free him from the limbo and brought him into this 2nd show.. WAY more satisfying to think about and continue. If they make s02 why should we care? About Willies and Lana that barely had any romance going on? When the whole time his brother was painted (pun intended) as the hero .. yet now good ending for him. Anyways, that's my only complait. Pretty decent to watch otherwise. See more Nov 16 It started real slow, picked up pace then peaks around episode six and takes a steep dive down into nonsense, terrible writing and an ending so unsatisfactory it made me regret watching the show to begin with. The whole meta concept isn't really thaught through or at least not executed in a good way. Take away that concept and it comes down to a very bleak version of the very crime shows it's meant to mock. The characters, except Fatty, have no substance whatsoever. I get that they are supposed to be background characters and as such replaceable. But the show is literally about background parts taking the front stage. And still neither the script nor the actors manage to give them character See more Admiral b @admiral_mohamed Oct 4 I did not like the story or characters See more K T Sep 18 This is one of two shows I've felt the need to recommend. This show is a absolute must see for many reasons. It is such a fun watch with others to debate thoughts, compare favourites and enjoy the show. Comedy, drama, thriller, romance, it has it all. Honestly first rotten tomatoe review I've made. I hope others feel the same and another season gets going! See more Gareth v Jun 17 Dull. Extemely dull. Outside of Ronnie Chieng's "mean waiter", this show lacks humour and any real dramatic punch to keep you entertained. See more Emma C Jun 9 I really enjoyed the book so was excited for the live adaptation. It felt like a mix between "Inception" and "Wanda Vision" type of concept. Never really knew what was "reality" or "scripted". But the TLDR is it's easy to get lost when chasing someone else's dream, so chase your own instead. See more Read all reviews
