Lili Loofbourow Washington Post There is no compulsion to reinvent, no needless experimental energy. The series feels instead like a lush and leisurely expansion. But the beats — and the dishes — remains the same. Nov 7, 2024 Full Review Daniel Fienberg The Hollywood Reporter The grammar of food porn has dramatically evolved in the past decade, and the influence of the Chef’s Table brand of presentation is evident throughout, right down to careful onscreen identification of pivotal dishes in their completed form. Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Aramide Tinubu Variety This narrative is a heady and intoxicating affair. Therefore, Tita and Pedro had to be perfectly cast for the series to soar, and thankfully, Guaita and Baida are up for the task. Nov 4, 2024 Full Review Jorge Rivera Rubio QiiBO The first two episodes left me hungry for more, not necessarily because I wanted to see what happens next, but because the dish lacked substance, mostly the sensually mischievous spirit that Esquivel infused in her novel. This new adaptation offers a more complex and rich vision of one of the most beloved and representative love stories of Mexican literature, inviting a deeper reflection on its themes. Audience Member Being unfamiliar with the story, I wasn't sure what to expect beyond some romance and magical realism. Like Water for Chocolate has more than that, but still boils down to a sort of prestige telenovela. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review J A This is the most beautifully performed, excellently acted/written, and well-produced telenovela piece of sadistic trash I’ve ever seen. I regret watching it and really should have listened to my son and gotten up and left my wife (who ended up hating it as well) to finish this dreary series. I wouldn’t be surprised if the director thought that, for their next master piece, creating a series out of Isaac’s “Maria” or Pérez Galdós “Marianela” (that would be a real “self-castigating” activity to watch, while I whip myself with barb wire). I’m not being sarcastic about the acting, production, writing, and talent; it was superb. From my perspective, the dilemma was that someone thought it would be wise to extend a poignant story that had been a compelling book and made into an excellent film and not only turn it into an overdrawn, painful-to-watch, narrative about an abused woman who quite literally takes it from EVERYONE (even her so-called soulmate) for the length of six LONG-WINDED episodes, but to (as it’s now confirmed) end up being extend for a SECOND SEASON of additional melodramatic agony! I suppose I’m not surprised it’s been so loved my many; this society doth enjoy to consume emotional abuse and violence (fortunately, we do get next to nothing of the latter). But… “Holy-bats**** Batman!” was this brutal to watch and, in the end, no outlet for relief! No hope! Just utter and devastating bleakness (which is certainly apropos for the times). My only warning: Watch At Your Own Risk! And if you love it… God love you for it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Sloth P This retelling is incredible. One of my favorite novels of all time and the actors bring it to life. I loved the movie but always felt like it left too much out. This doesn't do that, nor does it water the story down to draw it out. It is the perfect mix of film meets novel. The writing is magical, the cinematography is masterful, the acting is exceptional, and overall this is the best piece of cinema I have watched in over a decade. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Sharon H I’m so glad this was renewed for a second season. The storytelling is great. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Norma R Beautiful adaptation of a literary classic. A must watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review petrs l Breathtaking! Outstanding!
