A crime drama about an important contemporary issue, America's prison system, "Mayor of Kingstown" follows the McLusky family in Kingstown, Mich., where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry; the family of power brokers between police, criminals, inmates, prison guards and politicians tackle themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality; the crime thriller series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.

An engrossing crime melodrama. Keeping it all held together is Renner, whose Mike is a roiling cauldron of moral contradictions. Go to Full Review

Maybe there is an intriguing series buried underneath, but after three seasons of trying to show it, I am not investing much hope we will ever see it. Go to Full Review

Mayor of Kingstown remains pretty grim as it enters its third season, and the show seems to have only upped the ante on the number of times its characters say “fuck.” Go to Full Review

Mayor of Kingstown is often compelling, and Renner is solid in the role, even if the point of the series remains elusive. As the third season unfolds, maybe the pieces will finally come together. For now, we are mostly just along for the ride. Go to Full Review

Marco L @decatur555 3d Mayor of Kingstown is one of the most underrated crime dramas of recent years. It is brutal, relentlessly dark, and built around a city where prisons, gangs, police, politics, and families all feed the same cycle of violence. What makes it great is not just its harshness, but how fully realized its world feels. Jeremy Renner is outstanding, giving Mike McLusky a mix of toughness, exhaustion, intelligence, and vulnerability that anchors the whole series. The supporting cast is excellent too, and the direction, cinematography, production design, and score all work together to create an oppressive, deeply unsettling atmosphere. It is not a comforting show, and it does not try to be. But if you connect with its tone, it becomes gripping, powerful television with the kind of world-building that recalls the best crime sagas. Redefines the word intensity. See more Reviewer 2. @Reviewer24 Dec 31 Not even fully finished with this season but it continues to wow! See more Jennifer C @RT19241685 Nov 26 Edi Falco is AWFUL! Trying to hide her Jersey accent as a tuff prison warden is hard to watch! Get some BOTOX lady. The script is pretty obvious this season, a prison warden hooked on pills working for the cartel. Sounds like every day in America. See more Marguerite G @RT42797446 Nov 23 If sincerely into gratuitous violence (from gangs or police, you’ve found your show. Some series make up w superb plot, or acting. This is not one. It’s disgusting. See more Lawrence H @RT60273920 Nov 13 Okay, but so unrealistic and repetitive when it started with a premise that had so much potential. Hopefully they scale back the crazy and just make it more realistic, in the way "The Wire" made average street level crime realistic to all audiences. See more Read all reviews
