Told from the perspective of an unseen documentary filmmaker, the series offers an honest, often-hilarious perspective of family life. Parents Phil and Claire yearn for an honest, open relationship with their three kids. But a daughter who is trying to grow up too fast, another who is too smart for her own good, and a rambunctious young son make it challenging. Claire's dad, Jay, and his Latina wife, Gloria, are raising two sons together, but people sometimes believe Jay to be Gloria's father. Jay's gay son, Mitchell, and his partner, Cameron, have adopted a little Asian girl, completing one big -- straight, gay, multicultural, traditional -- happy family.

Eric Deggans NPR Good acting. Great writing. Human characters played by amazing actors. That might be the one twist network TV hasn't tried quite often enough. Nov 21, 2019 Full Review Hugh Montgomery Independent (UK) It is lifted out of the ordinary by a steady stream of jagged quips; some wonderfully staged set pieces; and performances that struck a finely wrought balance between caricature and naturalism. Nov 7, 2018 Full Review Alice Jones Independent (UK) It ran as a series of vignettes whose punchlines were often not quite strong enough. Still, as with any sketch show, there were some hits among misses... I'd tune in again, just for Ty Burrell's "cool dad" Nov 7, 2018 Full Review Kevin Carr 7M Pictures Even when the show tries to get heartfelt and honest, it doesn't get preachy or annoying. It keeps its messages subtle and doesn't overdo any sort of normalcy. Rated: 4/5 Nov 7, 2018 Full Review Glen Chapman Den of Geek It's a very perceptive, charming and funny series featuring excellent writing and performances that should appeal to a wide audience. L L If you are looking for a sophisticated, clever, and witty writing then this TV show is not for you. It is still entertaining and a bit funny too. I do like Sofia Vergara lol. She seems so original and genuine. Super cute. I think this is what keeps me watching this TV show. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Marie-Christine A Loved this show! It is incredible that it was a first season as spectacular as it was and it truly was amazing, nothing more to say. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Jay W I was very late to the game when it came to "Modern Family". When it was first airing back in 2009, it looked like just another entry in the wave of "The Office" mockumentary style comedies trying to capitalize on a popular trend. But now, upon finishing watching the whole series, I can safely say I was wrong. There is a lot of genuine heart, clever writing, memorable characters and hilarious jokes in this series. It is another series from showrunner Christopher Lloyd. Great Scott, not that Christopher Lloyd, the one that produced "Frasier". Despite this show having a very different energy, you can still feel the sharp wit of the Frasier boys as the comedic circumstances unfold. For a show that goes on for 11 seasons, a big thing I look out for is seasonal rot. Much like "the Simpsons" shows can't stay on top forever. How does this do at staying fresh for over a decade? As far as that goes, it is a surprisingly consistent show without feeling stale. The first season is a little awkward, some of the actors and writers were still trying to figure out the characters. And the final season things do seem to drop in quality with them not able to get all the characters in for the episodes. But other than that, it was a very solid run from beginning to end. The heart and soul of the show are the characters. Ed O'Neil, Ty Burrell and all the cast do a terrific job bringing these characters to life. The writers put them into funny situations and the rest of the humor comes from how they play off of one another. These characters were all flawed, that is what makes them interesting. But at the end of the day they love and support one another like a family, that is what makes them endearing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Ed R Perfect first season! Great attention getter and brilliant comedy! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Audience Member My all time favourite series.
