What to Know

Critics Consensus

On Call is an undemanding patrol thanks to its half-hour format, but the shorter runtime is about the only new novelty it brings to the cop drama genre.

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The show is trying to be sharp and immediate, using 30-minute episodes and body camera footage, but it ends up having little to say about the dynamic between the officers or wider policing issues. Jan 23, 2025 Full Review Margaret Lyons New York Times Its eight episodes are largely serialized and have the tense velocity that is the raison d’être for cop shows in the first place. Jan 15, 2025 Full Review Thelma Adams TheWrap These aren’t particularly bad cops, but they’re not as compelling as they need to be to break through in a flooded marketplace. Jan 10, 2025 Full Review Abhishek Srivastava The Times of India ...the show juggles so many minor crime cases that the central narrative...gets sidelined. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 31, 2025 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba With ugly cinematography, bad writing, and generic acting, On Call comes off like a Prime Video cop show that graduated from the Netflix school of algorithm-driven slop. Jan 24, 2025 Full Review Tatat Bunnag Bangkok Post On Call offers enough moral ambiguity to make its characters intriguing and complex. While it may not be groundbreaking, it presents a grim, gripping portrayal of the harsh realities of urban life and the officers sworn to protect it. Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Nico V On Call brings a unique perspective to a crowded market. We've seen the rookie use body cam footage at times but not to the extent of On Call. The show also appears accurately portray policing in LA county. I hope this show gets renewed so that we can see if Alex becomes a good cop. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Amal K This show was f**ing amazing. I loved that we finally got a show that wasn't just another dramatized cop show. The story was engaging and felt realistic. Kinda wish we saw more of their after hours stuff but overall a really great show. Hope they get greenlit for season 2 & more! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/25 Full Review Bill H Great show; love the 30 minute length… great writing and characters. Hope there’s a season 2. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Greg's V So far so good. I'm not sure why the critics are hating on this. Nice drama and action mix. Acting is decent and establishing shot are really nice. It's not totally original in the sense that it has the same beats as most shows. But they are good beats to have. In other words, nothing groundbreaking but it is good solid entertainment. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Ryan C Right away the first episode just threw me off. I'm not a cop but I'm very familiar with police procedure, everything from traffic stops to how detectives handle cases. Right away when that cop got shot she committed a big no no, she attempted to pull 3 people out on a stop with a feeling that it could be high risk stop. You ALWAYS wait for backup before pulling people out, and even with backup you'd do them one at a time. I know people will try to argue that the bad guy who shot her got the jump on her and may have done it anyway, but we don't know that. In reality, had the cop just kept up with the routine traffic stop ploy and got the driver's license and what not and then said, "wait here while I run this," she could have bought herself time for backup. Maybe they would have ran, but them running isn't the same as her being dead. 2nd biggest screw up in the first episode that threw me off, when the rookie and trainer are together on their first call, she goes out to the squad to threaten the suspect for hitting his own mother but OH NO, rookie shows up and still has his bodycam rolling. She proceeds to yell at him for not turning it off after the main questioning of the victim and suspect 🤦‍♂️🤣. Again, this is a no no. They weren't done yet! Lol. Before mom drugged herself up in the bathroom they hadn't determined if she'd press charges yet, I don't think they had a statement from her yet, just the main line of questioning about what happened when they first arrived. The cops would charge the suspect no matter what the victim wanted, but they'd still need a written statement from the victim and to wait for the ambulance to make sure she receives care. The cameras don't go off until they're done and walking back to the squad. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Audience Member Compelling cop drama. The show follows mainly two cops Hudson and Diaz, that are in and out of different scenarios. Show was a good watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
