What to Know

Critics Consensus

While Squid Game's return can't help but lose the element of surprise, some absolutely diabolical challenges and a knotty moral outlook keep this sophomore season thrilling.

Clarisse Loughrey Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) If everyone insists on going Squid Game crazy while blatantly ignoring its central critique, then Squid Game season two will be about how delusional people really can be while the truth firmly and repeatedly slaps them in the face. Apr 3, 2025 Full Review Dan Einav Financial Times Hwang keeps these disparate moods finely balanced throughout, knowing when to revel in lurid thrills and when to reveal more of the ideas underpinning it all. Jan 16, 2025 Full Review Lili Loofbourow Washington Post Instead of building, Jun-ho’s plot languishes. Gi-hun’s arc gets blurry. Worst of all, the antagonist remains a cipher. Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast The boat subplot aside, S02 is nearly as good as the first. Gi-hun's morals slipping under In-ho's influence is compelling and the new games, particularly the Pentathlon, are incredibly exciting. Bonus points for Gong Yoo's villainous turn Jan 31, 2025 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene This time around, though, something’s off. The characters are painfully one-dimensional, less real people than symbols. Jan 26, 2025 Full Review Christian Gallichio The Playlist “Squid Game” has gone the way of the Hollywood blockbuster. A little louder, a little less interesting, but also fundamentally entertaining, even if it sometimes feels like leftovers. Rated: B Jan 24, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Will J This was great, a good story, and I loved Thanos. But I didn't really like what they did with Gi-hun's character. It didn't really live up to the first season. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Matthew Y The writing is pretty bad and unrealistic in a lot of the situations. It's definitely worse than season 1 but still good. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review E. D Squid Games steals every detail from Japanese movies and anime, it's a long list since centuries, which is quite usual for South Korean writers. I would still prefer to watch the original instead of the copy, that went viral just because nobody knows, that South Korean always copies critical Japanese movies without quoting and sells it as its own. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review James S Don't waste your time watching this nonsense. It ends suddenly in the middle, there is no conclusion at all. It's like reading a thriller and some idiot has torn out the last page. Shocking! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/27/25 Full Review Gordo L Best season 10 out 10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review Josh A I'm writing this review before Season 3 comes out, so I don't have the full picture yet as this is Part 1 of the two-part story that is these two seasons, however it's off to a great start. It's clearly setting up a fantastic final season with Squid Game 3 anyways, and I have faith in the showrunners, so we'll judge this as a Part 1. Firstly, it's a fantastic follow-up to Season 1. We have Gi-Hun trying to find where the games are and him taking more of a heroic role, which was an interesting idea, and more of a focus on him trying to stop the games. We also have the Recruiter having more of a key role in Episode 1, which is one of the best episodes of the show in my opinion. But we also have an interesting theme of gambling that I hope is explored more. They introduce the concept that the players can vote on whether the games continue or not. And basically every time, they do. The first time its because they haven't made enough money to be satisfied and because Gi-Hun is there, the second time was "one more game" to get more money and the third time was them wanting even more money, but it was a tie and we didn't see if the games continue or not, we'll see in Season 3. It's a great theme that I hope we see more of in Season 3. Overall, a great start to the two-season arc that is Seasons 2 and 3. Can't wait for Season 3!
