David F A good documentary about not so much a cult as a weirdly influential middle aged guy who moves into his daughters dorm-like living situation at college and attracts a group of college kids to him for some weird communal living type stuff. This film benefits from the sheer number of people involved who sit down with the filmmakers, giving you a front row seat to the whole story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/16/24 Full Review Kathryn J I'm two episodes in and fascinated and horrified. I had read articles about this hideous man, so I was somewhat familiar, but I had no real idea of the torture of these young people AND that he had real friends in high places - i.e. Giulianni and Bernie Kerik. I am curious about Episode 3 and wish I didn't have to wake up early tomorrow or I'd have binged ‘til the end. I think this is a terrific documentary. It just shows how a clever psychopath can manipulate the minds of vulnerable people and lure them in. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/24 Full Review Ravenswood R A monumentally tedious documentary centering on the nebulous and insignificant traumas of several insufferable dullards who were taken in by a con man. Painfully long, dull and uninteresting. What are these people making such a big deal about? Why are they all so hysterical? Because they are shocked at how bland and stupid they are? Why do we not care at all about anything that happens here? Repetitive, unfocused, poorly edited, devoid of substance or meaning. It is nothing more than an endless series of interviews with insipid people who have experienced acting like idiots, and have nothing interesting to say about these experiences. There is no "sex cult," there is no cult at all, just dumb people talking about some relatively minor "bad" things that happened to them because they are stupid. A tremendous amount of exaggerated nothingness for three hours. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review Honest D Once this documentary gets going it does not let up. At times it was hard for me to maintain any sort of compassion for these people, i mean they were utterly brainwashed. Half way though the 2nd episode i had to Google Bernard Kerik the diabolical mastermind of all poor Ol Larrys woes and Whoa! Turns out he's already in prison on felony Tax fraud and he is now a co-conspirator in Trumps Georgia Election Interference debacle. It just adds another layer onto the insanity. Great doc. Highly recommended if you want to be shocked at the weird stuff humans are capable of. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/15/23 Full Review Mrs. M Unintellectual college students. Why would they let one of their friend's dad live with them during their college years? This never should have been allowed. Inkoo Kang New Yorker The Hulu docuseries is a remarkable work, advancing the prestige true-crime genre’s slow but steady reorientation toward centering victims. Mar 2, 2023 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine It’s a portrait of high-achieving kids made terrifyingly vulnerable by a combination of impossible expectations and depressing realities. Rated: 3.5/4 Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Joe Reid Primetimer There is meat on the bone of this gnarly, nasty saga that Stolen Youth only touches on, in order to focus on the more harrowing story of the college kids who were his victims. Aug 6, 2023 Full Review MontiLee Stormer MovieReelist.com Director Zach Heinzerling treats his subject matter and its survivors with care and respect, allowing them room to speak to their experiences without sensational glare. This is a difficult watch as the situation for all involved becomes more debilitating. Rated: 4/5 Mar 18, 2023 Full Review Carla Renata The Curvy Film Critic These stories are not uncommon and the more media sheds light on these injustices, the more these individuals are brought to task and realize their actions no longer continue without consequences and repercussions.
