Critics Consensus

Like discovering a home video collection that should've never been unearthed, The Creep Tapes is by turns chilling and tedious as Mark Duplass patiently worms his way into viewers' nightmares.

Aramide Tinubu Variety The series is comprised of dull fragments, acting more as a disjointed vanity project than a horror story spotlighting a homicidal maniac’s bloodlust. Nov 15, 2024 Full Review Jarrod Jones AV Club At its best, The Creep Tapes transcends its content-mill trappings and becomes something approaching a work of art. Rated: B+ Nov 14, 2024 Full Review Kaiya Shunyata RogerEbert.com While some episodes work and feel like fresh new products in the found footage genre, most do not feel so different from your average "V/H/S" film. Rated: 2/4 Nov 14, 2024 Full Review John Serba Decider Well, I feel like found-footage found itself at a dead end a decade ago, so the prevailing hope is that something compelling and/or funny is happening in front of the shaky cam. And that would be Duplass... Nov 20, 2024 Full Review Sharai Bohannon A Nightmare On Fierce Street Podcast Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass continue to mess with our minds as they discover new ways to make the familiar awkward, tense, and funny. They also manage to expand Peachfuzz's world into something even more dark and twisted than we could've ever imagined. Josh A This isn't at the same level of quality as the two movies, but this is still a pretty solid Creep TV show. It's the perfect concept: what was on the tapes at the end of Creep. And it's done well. Most of the episodes are quite formulaic. Someone goes to do a job for Josef, he plays with them a bit, then he kills them. It fits, as that's how serial killers work, and it's cool to see different victims and their stories. There's still a lot of unexplored kills, after all. There are some departures from the formula e.g. Episode 5, which was quite a ride, but it mostly follows the formula. My favourite of the episodes, however, is the final episode. It's pretty normal, showing Josef visiting his mum, up until the final scene. Instead of being panicked, the mum just scolds Josef, telling him he has to bury the body this time. Turns out, she's in on it. And she breastfeeds him at the end. It just drives home how creepy Josef is. I think that's his name. Probably not. Overall, a great TV show that fits the vibe of Creep very well. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Birithivy Y The Creep Tapes - 9/10. If you’re a fan of the first two Creep films, then this will work for you. For people that have no idea about those movies, then this miniseries will be a little bit of a confusing watch (tonally and narratively). The Creep series does an unnerving thing of mixing in the idea of The Poughkeepsie Tapes, but, with you actually seeing and witnessing what is on said tapes. You see this deranged and dissociative individual as he lures (and eventually attacks) these victims, and they’re all caught on camera. The first two films were more like long form short films, and this series does the smart thing and just show you some of the tapes that are from the collection of the killer that was shown in the end of the first film. Each episode is 20ish minutes of gradual intensity, as you know what will probably happen by the end, but you’re hooked to each episode because of Mark Duplass’ fantastic and hammy performance as the killer. With that being said, there are some episodes that are just okay (namely the bird watcher one and the motel one). But the first episode and the last episode are the standouts, and we actually get some sort of backstory and possible explanation as to why the man is the way that he is. Though probably not as funny as the original films, the essence and tone are perfectly captured and continued here, and hopefully we get a third film in the franchise! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Orlando C Cringe. It's like watching a magician do the same card trick over and over again. After three or four times, you just want to go home. Not sure why a proper Creep III sequel wasn't green-lit, but the dregs they want us to lap up here with this series are pretty stomach churning. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review E F This is the Peachfuzz extension we needed, but didn't deserve. I freakin love that stuff. Please make more Creep. Perfect blend of hilarious and scary. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Kate D If youre a fan of the movies, you will enjoy these. And although there isnt significant time to build up tension, Duplass is still as endearing as ever. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Dawglvr20 R I absolutely loved both Creep movies. The acting was amazing, the stories were unique and they genuinely felt real. Most found footage horror movies feel underwhelming and fake whereas the Creep films feel real and emotional. I think Mark Duplass made the right choice making The Creep Tapes a series instead of making a Creep 3 movie. The movies worked because it was believable that the characters stayed with Josef for as long as they did. It wouldn't make sense for anyone to stay once Josef starts acting strange so 30 minute episodes make more sense and we get to enjoy lots of different murders.
